We are looking for Mechanical Fitters to carry out mechanical fitting activities, inspections, maintenance, and repairs across a range of systems and equipment within the estate and, when required, in other sections.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver all planned preventative maintenance to meet departmental and business objectives.
- Identify, rectify, and report system, manufacturing, and operational defects or alterations.
- Work within established processes while contributing suggestions for improvement to increase efficiency.
- Comply with all Health & Safety legislation, Safe Systems of Work, and BM&T Clyde policies.
- Mentor colleagues, provide guidance to apprentices, and act as Apprentice Master when required.
- Lead and coordinate with other sections on multi-disciplinary tasks.
Knowledge & Skills Required
- Mechanical systems and equipment (including boilers, pressure systems, and documentation).
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and complete risk assessments.
- Familiarity with COSHH and safe systems of work.
Hazards & Work Environment
- Excessive noise and strenuous effort.
- Confined spaces and breathing apparatus.
- Vibrating tools and skin irritants.
- Working at height and outdoors.
- Hazardous substances (chemicals, asbestos, radiation).
Competencies (Minimum requirements from IFS Competence Framework)
- Environmental, Fire Safety, Health & Safety, Quality, and Security awareness.
- Awareness of confined space entry, asbestos regulations, and working at height.
- Practitioner-level knowledge of mechanical systems (including boiler and pressure systems).
- Awareness of nuclear emergency response procedures.
- Manual handling and electrical safe practices (access only).
Qualifications & Licences
- Recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (or equivalent).
- NVQ/SVQ Level 3 or equivalent is essential.
This role is full time 36 hours per week, Monday - Thursday with a 3 day weekend and is based on site at Faslane.
Essential experience
- Mechanical fitting working experience.
- Experience and knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment.
- Experience with interpreting engineering drawings.
- Knowledge or experience in a marine background would be advantageous but not essential.
