As part of the Flight Control Systems team, the engineer will assist in planning and performing the appropriate Systems Engineering work to undertake the development of advanced VTOL automatic flight control systems (FCS) for both manned and unmanned platforms. The work will be dependent on the project lifecycle phase and therefore it will require the engineer to have some flexibility and adaptability in the Systems Engineering tasks undertaken.

The work will be varied including support to the development of FCS system architectures and the creation of associated requirements for system functions, performance and interfaces. Modelling of FCS System elements and requirements may be required. Participation and support in the integration of FCS designs at both the rig level and within the aircraft may be required. The engineer may support FCS flight testing by helping to develop test plans and working closely with other colleagues to analyse and report the flight test data.

The engineer will create and edit a wide range of systems documentation from system specifications to rig and flight test schedules and flight clearance justification reports.

Key Skills and Experience Required:
  • Experience of design, integration and qualification of flight control systems or avionics, or in other industrial sectors which manage Safety Critical design work such as Nuclear / Marine / Underwater Systems.
  • Experience with system testing and troubleshooting on test benches.
  • Experience of avionics interface protocols, e.g. ARINC-429, MIL-STD-1553B.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the full Systems Engineering lifecycle.
  • Experience of creating and editing systems documentation, e.g. Requirement Specifications, Interface Control Documents, System/Sub-System Definition Documents, Test Schedules/Reports, Safety Assessments, etc.
  • Ability to communicate equally across multi-functional teams, and with colleagues at all levels.
  • Proactive approach on project and in dealing with day-to-day tasks.
  • Analytical and well organised.
Desirable:
  • Experience of aerospace standards, e.g. ADS33, DO-160, DO-178, DO-254, AS94900.
  • Experience of Systems Engineering standards, e.g. ARP-4754, ARP-4761.
  • Experience of civil certification processes and regulations CS25, CS27, CS29.
  • Experience with flight test activity related to flight control system or avionic systems development.
  • Knowledge of systems engineering tools and methodologies for requirements management and system modelling, e.g. Matlab, Simulink, IBM Rational DOORS, UML/SysML, CM tools.
