We are seeking an experienced Human Factors Consultant to support a high-profile nuclear defence programme. This is an exciting opportunity to work on complex, safety-critical projects, applying human factors expertise across the full system lifecycle. The successful candidate will play a key role in integrating human factors principles into system design, safety assessments, and operational environments within a highly regulated nuclear setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply human factors and ergonomics principles across concept, design, verification, and validation phases
- Conduct task analyses including HTA and CTA to assess operator interactions and system demands
- Perform human error identification and human reliability assessments using methodologies such as SHERPA and HEART
- Support Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) inputs into safety cases and Probabilistic Safety Assessments (PSA)
- Contribute to the design and evaluation of Human Machine Interfaces (HMI), including control room environments
- Plan and deliver usability assessments, simulator trials, and HF validation activities
- Identify and mitigate human performance risks in line with ALARP principles
- Produce technical reports and safety case documentation to support regulatory compliance
- Support design reviews, HAZID/HAZOP workshops, and multidisciplinary risk assessments
- Collaborate closely with engineering, safety, and project delivery teams
Key Requirements
- Proven Human Factors experience within nuclear, defence, or other high-hazard industries
- Strong understanding of task analysis, workload assessment, and human error analysis techniques
- Experience supporting safety cases and risk assessments including HRA/PSA
- Familiarity with nuclear safety culture, defence-in-depth, and ALARP principles
- Experience with HMI design and evaluation within complex operational environments
- Excellent communication and technical report writing skills
- Degree qualified in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology, Engineering, or a related discipline
Desirable Experience
- Experience on UK nuclear defence or civil nuclear programmes
- Knowledge of UK nuclear regulatory frameworks and ONR expectations
- Chartered status or working towards CIEHF or equivalent
- Experience with digital HMI systems and modern control room design
Contract Details
- 12 month initial contract

- Candidates must hold or be eligible to obtain UK SC Clearance
Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be willing to undergo security vetting and work within secure project environments where required.
