Highways Lighting Design Engineer – National Highways SDF
Rate: £40–£50 per hour (Umbrella) – negotiable based on experience
Location: UK-wide (Flexible – offices in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, and others)
Contract: Long-term (aligned with the National Highways Scheme Development Framework)

About the Role
Morson Edge is partnering with a leading international design consultancy delivering on the National Highways Scheme Development Framework on street lighting. We are seeking an experienced Highways Lighting Design Engineer to join a high-profile, long-term programme shaping the future of the UK's road infrastructure. The successful Highways Lighting Design Engineer will have experience of working on multiple street lighting projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop technical reports, feasibility studies, designs, specifications, and contract documentation.
- Conduct daytime and night-time site surveys of street lighting.
- Support Environmental Impact Assessments, Economic Assessments, and Business Case development.
- Collaborate with clients, electricity suppliers, contractors, professional bodies, sub-consultants, and multidisciplinary design teams.
Key Requirements
- Proven experience designing to British lighting/electrical standards (BS 5489, BS EN 13201, BS 7671).
- Strong understanding of trunk and local road lighting requirements.
- Excellent technical report writing and communication skills.
- Proficiency in lighting design software (e.g., Lighting Reality, Dialux) and electrical design calculation tools (e.g., Trimble, Castline).
