Job Purpose / Overview
The Engineering & Technical (E&T) function is a fundamental part of the Civil Works Programme, responsible for defining and assuring the design, engineering, and technical requirements across the project. The team leads the full lifecycle of design delivery - from requirements definition through to final acceptance - while managing budgets, resources, and supply chain interfaces. It also ensures constructability and effective design coordination across Civil Works, Site Establishment, and Off-Site Infrastructure.
As Civil Technical Engineering Manager - Ancillary Works, you will support the definition and validation of technical requirements and specifications, working closely with the Sizewell C Design Delivery Management (DDM) team and Nuclear Services. Strong technical leadership is required to manage technical open points and design changes in line with governance processes, including PCP, TDF, NCC, and Replication Principles.
You will contribute to Design Technical Assurance across the full project lifecycle, enabling acceptance through structured reviews and approvals defined within surveillance plans. You will also manage technical risk and provide expert input into Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Technical Queries, and communications with the design supply chain.
The role requires close coordination with internal and external stakeholders, managing technical interfaces across the project and ensuring full compliance with engineering and design processes - from requirements capture through to Engineering Design Review (EDR) - in line with Contract Schedules and the Integrated Work Schedule (IWS).
Principal Accountabilities
Reporting to the E&T Programme Engineering Manager, the Civil Technical Engineering Manager - Ancillary Works will operate as part of a multi-disciplinary leadership team and act as a representative of the Sizewell C Technical Directorate.
Key responsibilities include:
- Defining or validating Sizewell C technical requirements and specifications, including engagement with Nuclear Services and the Design Authority to support approvals
- Supporting stakeholders in delivering Design Technical Assurance (including Digital Assurance) across the full design lifecycle to enable Sizewell C acceptance
- Ensuring all design deliverables are fully coordinated, including within a 3D design environment
- Sharing technical inputs with the Engineering & Technical Project Manager to support reporting and performance management
- Providing technical input to Early Warnings, Compensation Events, Technical Queries, and general communications from the L3 design supply chain
- Integrating Civil Works Alliance (CWA) construction methodologies and construction inputs into L3 design requirements
- Coordinating technical interfaces with other programmes and parties, including Site Establishment, Off-Site Infrastructure, NI Programme, CIBOP Programme, and Sizewell B
- Ensuring engineering and design processes (e.g. Design Management Plans) are developed, implemented, and complied with across the full design lifecycle
- Ensuring designers fulfil their duties under CDM regulations and engaging with CDM advisers to maintain compliance
- Supporting delivery of design outputs in line with Contract Schedules and the Integrated Work Schedule (IWS)
- Performing technical surveillance activities, including coordination of engineering design gateway reviews, management of open points, risks, and trends, and establishment and maintenance of the risk register with regular updates
You will be supported by Sizewell C technical specialists across relevant disciplines and UK-specific regulatory requirements (e.g. CDM).

Knowledge & Skills
Essential:
- Proven experience across concept, detailed design, and construction phases, including management of design stages, in one or more of the following areas:
- Heavy civil engineering structures (reinforced concrete, structural steel)
- Ground engineering (earthworks, drainage, pavements, slopes, retaining structures, foundations, construction logistics)
- External works (drainage, utilities, earthworks, access, accessibility, paved and unpaved surfaces)
Desirable:
- Familiarity with EPR nuclear design and NEC contract frameworks
- Experience with engineering documentation workflows and review processes
- Proficiency in engineering management systems and digital tools
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
- Honours degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent)
- Chartered Engineer (MICE or MIStructE), or actively working towards chartership
Desirable:
- Experience providing technical leadership on large, complex infrastructure projects, particularly within the nuclear sector (e.g. Hinkley Point C)
