We are recruiting on behalf of a leading organisation within the Rail Rolling Stock industry. Due to continued growth and investment, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Technician to join the team at Chester on a permanent basis. This role offers the opportunity to work within a safety-critical environment, supporting the maintenance and reliability of modern passenger rolling stock while developing your technical skills and railway knowledge.

Role Purpose

The Assistant Technician is responsible for carrying out planned and unplanned maintenance activities on rolling stock units maintained at the Chester site. Working as part of a dedicated maintenance team, you will ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards, contributing to the reliability and availability of the fleet.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out maintenance, servicing, repair and fault-finding activities as allocated by the Team Leader or Production Manager.
  • Complete all work within agreed timescales and to recognised engineering standards.
  • Support both planned preventative maintenance and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all safety procedures, standards and documentation are followed at all times.
  • Use test and measuring equipment to diagnose faults and verify repairs.
  • Assist with fault finding, root cause analysis and corrective actions on mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ensure work sheets and maintenance documentation are completed accurately and signed off promptly upon completion of work.
  • Attend technical, quality, safety and operational briefings and implement any actions arising.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of depot performance and processes.
  • Take an active role in personal training and development activities.
  • Ensure quality procedures, work instructions and engineering standards are adhered to at all times.
  • Carry out duties within your level of competence as directed by the Team Leader, Senior Production Manager or Depot Manager.
  • Follow local procedures and Railway Group Standards relating to the movement and operation of rolling stock.

Essential Qualifications

NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Experience working with mechanical and electrical components, maintenance and servicing activities.
  • Experience using test and measuring equipment.
  • Fault-finding and root cause analysis experience.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work shifts, including days, nights and weekends.

Desirable Experience

  • Previous railway or rolling stock maintenance experience.
  • Driver shunting experience (not essential as full training will be provided).
  • Experience working within a safety-critical or highly regulated engineering environment.
