Join one of the UK's most ambitious infrastructure programmes and help shape the future of rail travel. We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Fire Engineer to support the delivery of fire engineering and fire safety assurance across a major rail infrastructure programme.
Reporting to the Head of Fire Engineering, you will play a key role in developing technical standards, supporting safety assurance activities, and ensuring compliance with fire safety legislation and best practice throughout the project lifecycle.
About the Role
As Senior Fire Engineer, you will provide specialist technical expertise across a broad range of fire engineering disciplines, supporting the safe and effective delivery of complex infrastructure and station environments. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, delivery partners, contractors, designers, and external stakeholders to ensure fire safety is embedded into design, construction, testing, commissioning, and operational planning activities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the development of fire engineering strategies, standards, specifications, and technical requirements
- Provide technical advice on evacuation, compartmentation, fire detection and alarm systems, and fire suppression systems
- Assist with fire safety assurance activities, including safety arguments and technical compliance reviews
- Support the management of interfaces between fire systems and wider infrastructure systems
- Participate in Qualitative Design Reviews (QDRs) and risk assessments under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order
- Undertake fire safety inspections and audits during construction and commissioning phases
- Support engagement with Fire & Rescue Services throughout design, construction, and operational stages
- Assist in developing emergency plans and supporting tabletop and live emergency exercises
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of fire engineering legislation, standards, and industry best practice
About You
You will be a technically capable fire engineering professional with strong stakeholder engagement skills and experience working within complex infrastructure, transportation, or built environment projects.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Experience applying fire engineering principles and technical standards within major projects
- Knowledge of fire safety legislation, standards, and fire engineering methodologies
- Ability to provide technical guidance and support to multidisciplinary teams
- Experience reviewing designs, identifying risks, and supporting assurance processes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
- Experience supporting fire risk assessments and fire safety compliance activities
Desirable
- Experience within rail, infrastructure, transportation, or large-scale construction projects
- Understanding of systems integration and interface management
- Familiarity with construction fire safety and operational fire strategies
- Chartered status or progress toward professional accreditation
