Role Overview
We are seeking a Protection & Controls Engineer (Design) to deliver front-end and detailed desktop design of protection and control systems for UK electricity networks, including DNO and National Grid assets. The role focuses purely on design and technical assurance, with no site, commissioning, SCADA, or operational control responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop protection philosophies in line with DNO / National Grid requirements
- Design and coordinate HV and EHV protection schemes
- Carry out fault level calculations, protection grading, and selectivity studies
- Apply protection schemes for transformers, feeders, busbars, generators, and cables
- Produce and review protection design documentation, including:
- Single line and protection single line diagrams
- Protection and control schematics
- Calculation and philosophy reports
Skills & Experience
- Strong experience with HV / EHV protection systems
- Knowledge of modern protection relays (ABB, Siemens, SEL, GE, Schneider)
- Experience producing high-quality, auditable design documentation
- Background working on UK DNO and/or National Grid projects (essential)
Qualifications
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- Typically 3β7 years' experience in protection & controls design
- CEng or working towards IET chartership desirable
