Our client is seeking an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to support a portfolio of Defence and Nuclear Energy projects, delivering work from concept studies through to detailed design. The role is primarily aligned to their Nuclear Energy programmes, though there may be opportunities to support work across wider sectors including Water, Transport, Energy, Green Energy and Oil & Gas.
You will work within a multi-disciplinary environment, leading electrical engineering delivery across complex projects and taking responsibility for high-quality technical outputs including calculations, reports, specifications and design documentation. This is a hybrid role, combining remote working with occasional office attendance, site visits, design reviews and client meetings, primarily across the North West region. You will also play a key role in mentoring junior engineers and providing technical leadership, including confidently challenging designs and delivering value-engineered solutions in client-facing environments.
As a client-facing Principal Electrical Engineer, you will lead technical delivery across projects and proposals, ensuring quality, compliance and successful outcomes for clients. You will be responsible for both technical excellence and team coordination, supporting delivery across multiple workstreams while maintaining strong stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership and electrical engineering input across projects and proposals
- Prepare, check and approve engineering documentation and deliverables
- Allocate work across the electrical discipline and manage delivery against programme
- Mentor and develop graduates and less experienced engineers
- Ensure delivery to programme, budget and client expectations
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, codes of practice and client/company standards
- Prepare equipment specifications and requisitions (HV/LV switchboards, transformers, UPS, motors, VFDs, lighting, etc.)
- Produce installation scopes of work
- Review supplier quotations and complete technical bid assessments
Technical tasks may include:
- Protection grading studies and earthing calculations
- Power system analysis (fault levels, load flow studies)
- Electrical equipment sizing calculations
- Commissioning support
- DNO engagement and procurement support
Candidate Profile
Essential
- Strong knowledge of design practices and installation requirements within the Nuclear sector
- Significant electrical engineering experience on Nuclear projects
- Existing Security Clearance or the ability to obtain clearance
- Excellent knowledge of UK legislation and engineering standards
- Experience with nuclear plant installation requirements
- Experience with CE/UKCA compliance (ATEX, PED, LVD, Machinery Directive, EMC)
- Strong understanding of risk management and HSE requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent (apprenticeships considered)
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status, or close to achieving professional registration
