Senior/Principal Building Structures Engineer in Birmingham

We are recruiting Senior and Principal Building Structures Engineers for a leading infrastructure consultancy delivering projects across the UK's public-sector and secure estates. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the structural design and delivery of infrastructure and Ministry of Justice building projects, including prisons and other secure operational facilities.

Depending on your experience, you will either work as a senior member of the structural engineering team or provide technical and team leadership across multiple schemes. You will help produce safe, compliant and technically robust engineering solutions while supporting junior engineers and maintaining high standards of quality, cost and programme performance.

Key responsibilities

• Produce, review and approve structural engineering designs, calculations, drawings and technical documentation.
• Develop technically robust solutions that comply with client requirements, Structural Eurocodes, Building Regulations and relevant engineering standards.
• Lead or support teams of engineers and technicians delivering single and multidisciplinary projects.
• Provide technical direction, mentoring and guidance to junior team members.
• Check engineering deliverables and take responsibility for their technical quality.
• Manage design quality and programme performance across multiple concurrent schemes.
• Coordinate effectively with architects, building-services engineers, contractors, clients, suppliers and other project stakeholders.
• Attend progress meetings, technical reviews and client meetings, responding to technical queries throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support project planning, resource allocation and delivery against agreed budgets and programmes.
• At Principal level, take responsibility for project commercial performance, including budget and cost control.
• Contribute to bids, fee proposals and wider work-winning activities.
• Undertake site surveys and inspections and support site-based delivery where required.
• Plan and coordinate work within live operational environments while minimising disruption to essential services.
• At Principal level, undertake people-management responsibilities when required.

About you

You will have:

• Demonstrable building structures design experience.
• A degree or equivalent qualification in civil or structural engineering.
• Experience producing and checking structural designs, calculations, drawings and associated documentation.
• Strong knowledge of Structural Eurocodes, Building Regulations and structural design governance.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
• The ability to manage quality, priorities and programme commitments across multiple schemes.
• Strong communication skills and the confidence to engage professionally with clients, contractors, suppliers and other stakeholders.
• Experience using relevant three-dimensional design and structural-analysis software.
• Familiarity with Tekla Structural Designer and Tekla Tedds, or comparable structural design software.
• Incorporated or Chartered status with an appropriate professional institution, or demonstrable progress toward professional registration.

For Principal-level consideration, you should also demonstrate:

• Chartered status with a relevant professional institution.
• Experience leading a team of engineers and technicians.
• Responsibility for checking, approving and overseeing technical deliverables.
• Experience managing project budgets, resources and commercial performance.
• The ability to provide authoritative technical leadership across several projects.
• Experience supporting bids, client development and work-winning activity.
• Secure and operational building experience.
• Previous experience delivering projects within prisons, courts, Ministry of Justice buildings or other secure public-sector environments would be highly advantageous.

We are also interested in structural engineers with transferable experience from infrastructure, defence, healthcare, education, rail, aviation or other operationally sensitive estates. You should understand the additional challenges associated with working in occupied and secure environments, including:

• Maintaining safety, security and operational continuity.
• Coordinating access, surveys and construction activities around live operations.
• Working with multiple technical and operational stakeholders.
• Managing existing structures, refurbishment constraints and incomplete asset information.
• Maintaining robust design assurance, quality control and documentation.
• Developing practical and buildable solutions within constrained sites.
• The ability to obtain the necessary security and Ministry of Justice vetting will be required.
