About the Role
Our client is proud to have been appointed by HS2 to deliver civil engineering works across an 80km section of the new high-speed rail link between the Chiltern Tunnel and Long Itchington Wood. We are currently seeking an experienced Section Engineer with a strong background in earthworks and/or drainage to join our team on a long-term freelance contract based in the Calvert area. Reporting to the Sub Agent, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of works from construction through to close-out, ensuring activities are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Report directly to the Sub Agent and support the delivery of works from construction to completion
- Supervise and manage the site engineering team, including performance and development of Site Engineers
- Assist with temporary works design schemes and ensure implementation aligns with approved designs
- Liaise with the Sub Agent and Section Foreman to allocate labour, plant, and materials effectively
- Manage and coordinate site setting-out activities
- Identify, resolve, and escalate technical issues in liaison with the Sub Agent
- Monitor and coordinate subcontractors, ensuring works are completed in line with contractual requirements
- Ensure the engineering team has access to up-to-date information, drawings, and resources
- Assist with the production of programmes, progress reports, resource plans, and cost plans
- Contribute to financial forecasting and reporting
- Ensure all works are carried out in compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards
About the Candidate
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- HNC or Degree in Civil Engineering / Construction (or equivalent)
- Working towards or holding professional membership (ICE preferred)
- Proven experience in site engineering combined with construction supervision
- Essential experience in earthworks and/or drainage
- Strong technical problem-solving and communication skills
- Ability to manage teams and coordinate subcontractors effectively
Mandatory Requirements
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
- Valid CSCS card (White, White-Yellow, Red β Experienced, Gold β Supervisor, or Black β Manager)
- SSSTS or SMSTS certification
