About the Role

Our client is proud to have been appointed by HS2 to deliver civil engineering works across an 80km section of the new high-speed rail link between the Chiltern Tunnel and Long Itchington Wood. We are currently seeking an experienced Section Engineer with a strong background in earthworks and/or drainage to join our team on a long-term freelance contract based in the Calvert area. Reporting to the Sub Agent, you will play a key role in the successful delivery of works from construction through to close-out, ensuring activities are delivered safely, on programme, within budget, and to the required quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report directly to the Sub Agent and support the delivery of works from construction to completion
  • Supervise and manage the site engineering team, including performance and development of Site Engineers
  • Assist with temporary works design schemes and ensure implementation aligns with approved designs
  • Liaise with the Sub Agent and Section Foreman to allocate labour, plant, and materials effectively
  • Manage and coordinate site setting-out activities
  • Identify, resolve, and escalate technical issues in liaison with the Sub Agent
  • Monitor and coordinate subcontractors, ensuring works are completed in line with contractual requirements
  • Ensure the engineering team has access to up-to-date information, drawings, and resources
  • Assist with the production of programmes, progress reports, resource plans, and cost plans
  • Contribute to financial forecasting and reporting
  • Ensure all works are carried out in compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards

About the Candidate

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

  • HNC or Degree in Civil Engineering / Construction (or equivalent)
  • Working towards or holding professional membership (ICE preferred)
  • Proven experience in site engineering combined with construction supervision
  • Essential experience in earthworks and/or drainage
  • Strong technical problem-solving and communication skills
  • Ability to manage teams and coordinate subcontractors effectively

Mandatory Requirements

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
  • Valid CSCS card (White, White-Yellow, Red – Experienced, Gold – Supervisor, or Black – Manager)
  • SSSTS or SMSTS certification
