Our client is seeking an Environmental Advisor to join their Projects team on an 18-month contract. The role supports a portfolio of waste management, decommissioning, remediation, demolition and infrastructure projects, ensuring environmental compliance while providing practical support to operational teams on site.

This is a hands-on role requiring someone who is equally comfortable carrying out field-based environmental assurance activities as they are completing office-based documentation and project support.

The Role

You will provide environmental advice and assurance across live projects, working closely with operational teams to ensure compliance with environmental legislation, permit conditions and company management systems. You will act as the environmental subject matter expert, supporting project delivery through audits, inspections, risk assessments and stakeholder engagement while promoting continual environmental improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Environmental Compliance
    • Provide competent environmental advice to project and operational teams.
    • Ensure compliance with environmental legislation, permits and company management systems.
    • Support compliance with regulatory requirements and client standards.
  • Environmental Assurance
    • Conduct environmental inspections, audits and compliance assessments.
    • Review environmental risk assessments and method statements.
    • Investigate environmental incidents, near misses and non-conformances.
    • Maintain a strong site presence, positively challenging behaviours where required.
  • Project Support
    • Participate in project planning and design reviews.
    • Support environmental assessments and permit applications.
    • Provide environmental input into contractor selection, management and performance.
    • Attend project meetings and environmental forums.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Liaise with regulators, contractors and internal stakeholders.
    • Support regulatory inspections and environmental audits.
    • Deliver environmental coaching, awareness and communication across project teams.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Environmental qualification (degree or equivalent environmental discipline).
  • Experience working within waste management, remediation, infrastructure, demolition or similar industrial projects.
  • Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation and compliance.
  • Confident carrying out environmental audits and site inspections.
  • Comfortable working in a highly visible, site-based role with operational teams.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to challenge where necessary.

Desirable

  • Chartered Environmental professional, or actively working towards Chartership.
  • NEBOSH Health & Safety qualification.
  • Nuclear industry experience is advantageous but not essential.
  • Experience working within waste management environments (any waste sector considered).
