An established, fast-growing UK bank is expanding its lending portfolio and is seeking an experienced Underwriter to join its SME Lending team. The organisation supports a broad range of retail, SME and Banking-as-a-Service clients, and is committed to maintaining a strong financial crime and risk management framework as it scales. As part of this growth, the bank is enhancing its personal and business banking offering, and continues to invest heavily in robust credit practices.
About the Role
This role plays a key part in assessing, structuring and recommending lending proposals, ensuring sound credit decisions and high-quality service for customers and internal stakeholders. You will analyse counterparties, ensure serviceability, assess collateral and support the delivery of a prudent and commercially minded lending strategy. You will work across a variety of asset classes, including:
- Trading businesses secured against owner-occupied commercial properties
- Commercial property investment
Key Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of the bank’s credit strategy in line with risk appetite, policy frameworks and governance requirements.
- Help maintain high standards of professionalism, integrity and conduct across the underwriting function.
- Uphold robust lending standards consistent with industry expectations.
- Ensure strong customer outcomes through quality credit assessment and decision-making.
- Coach, mentor and support colleagues within the underwriting team.
- Work closely with frontline teams to balance commercial objectives with appropriate risk management.
- Prepare high-quality underwriting papers, both within delegated authority and for escalation to Credit Committee.
- Present and defend cases at Credit Committee when required.
- Monitor portfolio performance, including early warning indicators, in-life events and signs of deterioration.
- Set and oversee covenants and ongoing conditions on new and existing facilities.
- Collaborate with senior credit leaders and stakeholders to refine portfolio oversight processes.
- Conduct periodic reviews and annual assessments of existing exposures.
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience as an underwriter within Commercial Real Estate (essential).
- Background in banking or financial services (desirable).
- Strong analytical skills, including comfortable use of data visualisation or analytical tools.
- Experience drafting policies, reports or formal credit documentation.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
