A growing specialist lender is looking to hire a Credit Underwriter to support its expanding consumer finance operation. This is an opportunity to join a fast-moving financial services business that has recently gone through significant transformation and investment, with ambitious growth plans across retail lending products. The business operates in a modern, digital-first environment and is seeking someone who enjoys balancing customer outcomes with sound credit decisioning in a regulated setting.
The Role
You’ll be responsible for assessing consumer lending applications across a range of retail finance products, ensuring decisions are aligned to internal policy, affordability requirements and responsible lending principles. The role involves reviewing applications from initial submission through to final outcome, using a range of systems and supporting documentation to assess risk, verify information and identify potential fraud or financial crime concerns. You’ll work closely with operational, risk and customer teams, helping to maintain service levels whilst contributing ideas to improve underwriting processes and customer journeys. This role suits someone comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail, sound judgement and customer focus are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess consumer credit applications in line with lending policy and risk appetite
- Review supporting documentation including bank statements, payslips and identification documents
- Carry out affordability and creditworthiness assessments using bureau data and internal systems
- Identify and escalate fraud, AML or financial crime concerns where required
- Complete due diligence checks including sanctions, PEP and AML screening
- Manage applications through to completion, referral or decline
- Communicate with customers and third parties regarding outstanding information and application queries
- Maintain strong service levels and turnaround times across applications
- Support continuous improvement initiatives within the underwriting function
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across operations, risk and customer support teams
Experience Required
- Experience within unsecured lending, retail finance or personal loans would be advantageous, although candidates from secured lending backgrounds will also be considered.
- Previous experience underwriting consumer lending applications
- Background within an FCA regulated financial services environment
- Understanding of affordability assessments and responsible lending principles
- Experience reviewing customer documentation and credit bureau data
- Strong attention to detail and decision-making ability
- Comfortable working to service levels in a high-volume environment
- Excellent communication skills with a customer-focused approach
Working Pattern
This position operates on a rotating shift basis across a 35-hour week, including evenings and weekends. Typical pattern includes:
- Early shifts between 8am to 4pm
- Late shifts 12pm to 8pm
- Approximately 1 in every 4 to 5 weekends, Weekend hours are typically 10am to 5pm
