Supporting the Glenglass to Glenmuckloch project within the SPEN Framework, you will lead the coordination and management of design activities for major overhead line infrastructure, contributing to the enhancement of Scotland's energy network.

Morgan Sindall Infrastructure is seeking an experienced Design Manager to join our Energy Business Unit. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in the successful delivery of major energy and power infrastructure projects, managing design activities from bid stage through to project completion.

As Design Manager, you will be responsible for leading and coordinating all design aspects across tenders and live projects, ensuring safe, compliant, commercially viable and fully integrated design solutions. Working closely with clients, consultants, delivery teams and key stakeholders, you will drive innovation, quality and best practice throughout the design process while supporting the successful delivery of nationally significant infrastructure projects.

This role offers an excellent opportunity to influence project outcomes, lead multidisciplinary design teams and contribute to some of the UK's most important energy infrastructure programmes.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all design activities across tender and project delivery stages.
  • Establish, maintain and manage effective project design resources and team structures.
  • Provide a professional, client-focused design management service to clients, partners and suppliers.
  • Develop and implement project design strategies that support successful delivery and business objectives.
  • Promote innovation and continuous improvement throughout the design process.
  • Manage and coordinate the design process through all project stages.
  • Establish effective design management procedures with internal and external design teams.
  • Chair design reviews, coordination meetings and design workshops.
  • Ensure multidisciplinary design outputs are fully coordinated and integrated.
  • Produce and maintain design programmes aligned with overall project delivery schedules.
  • Monitor design progress and provide updates to project teams and stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with company design management procedures and governance requirements.
  • Verify that designs meet project briefs, specifications and contractual requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with current legislation, industry standards, codes of practice and statutory obligations.
  • Coordinate activities with contractors, regulatory authorities and key stakeholders.
  • Manage design change processes, ensuring changes are properly reviewed, approved and implemented.
  • Ensure design solutions support commercial objectives, buildability and cost management requirements.
  • Manage design development within agreed budgets and customer requirements.
  • Promote sustainable design principles throughout project development and delivery.
  • Ensure sustainability considerations are embedded within project solutions.
  • Support value engineering initiatives and identify opportunities to optimise project outcomes.

Essential

Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • HNC, HND, Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience delivering design management services throughout both bid and project delivery stages.
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams and coordinating complex design programmes.
  • Experience working on major infrastructure, engineering or construction projects.
  • Experience supporting tender submissions and project bids.
  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies, design coordination and project delivery.
  • Excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Excellent organisational, planning and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining quality and compliance standards.
  • Proactive approach to problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • Strong commercial awareness and understanding of project delivery requirements.

Desirable

  • Membership of a relevant professional institution, such as CIOB or equivalent.
  • Experience working with ViewPoint.
  • Experience working with Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC).
  • Experience working within energy, utilities or major infrastructure sectors.
  • Specialist knowledge in a relevant engineering or construction discipline.

About The Energy Business Unit

We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators.

Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying, and jointing of cables, (fluid filled and XLPe), substations and overhead line, new build, repair, and refurbishment services.
