We’re strengthening our engineering capability to deliver major substation projects across the UK and have an opportunity for an Engineering Manager to work with the project teams to ensure effective engineering solutions across planning, design, procurement and delivery, along with conducting assurance activities focusing on procurement and design phases.

The Role

  • Oversee the day-to-day management of internal and external engineering resources, ensuring all deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and in line with project requirements for National Grid’s Great Grid Partnership.
  • Provide technical leadership across pre-contract and delivery stages, identifying temporary works needs, allocating resources, and acting as a key point of contact for customers.
  • Manage relationships with consulting engineers, ensuring compliance with CDM regulations, and drive a culture of innovation, improvement, and knowledge sharing across the Infrastructure business unit.
  • Support bids, tender reviews, and pre-contract activities, as well as the mobilisation of new contracts, ensuring health, safety, quality, and environmental standards are met.

The Candidate

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in relevant field.
  • Chartered Engineer or similar and participation in affiliated bodies for example Institute of Civil Engineering (desirable).
  • Experience in both HV & LV substation systems up to 400kV covering Primary Plant and Protection and Control systems.
  • Preferably having previously held CDAE appointment in either Primary Plant or Protection and Control.
  • Experience of managing design process in tender or contract environment.
  • Experience with working in joint ventures and alliances or other collaborative working.

We have extensive experience in upgrading and replacing energy networks, delivering asset management for major UK energy companies and network operators. Our transmission and distribution services involve the upgrading and replacement of electricity assets both above and below ground. Within the electricity sector we install and maintain assets, including excavation, laying and jointing of cables, substations and overhead line, new build, repair and refurbishment services.
