We are looking for a Head of Engineering to lead the delivery of engineering management and quality control within the Water, Aviation and Highways business. This is a senior role reporting to the Water, Aviation & Highways Engineering Director. The Head of Engineering will have significant experience leading the delivery of both Temporary and Permanent Works Management and Engineering Assurance with proven success.

The person:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in Civil Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer or similar and participation in affiliated bodies for example Institution of Civil Engineers
  • Experienced in the management, surveillance and audit of engineering regimes
  • Experienced in the leadership of temporary works solutions and management on complex projects
  • Significant senior level involvement in large project tender teams including price and quality adjudicated bids
  • An understanding of commercial aspects including typical terms and conditions and procurement models and how they impact engineering delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and provide a professional, comprehensive and sustainable engineering service for the BU
  • Have a proven track record of leading and delivering engineering requirements on complex projects within the water, aviation and/or highways sectors
  • Resolve complex technical problems in a timely manner as and when they arise
  • Lead Temporary Works Management for the BU
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Codes, Standards and Legislation
  • Manage and co-ordinate safely the overall engineering process bringing innovation and continuous improvement benefits to the projects at bid and delivery stages
  • Drive the quality control culture within the BU, ensuring effective quality control across projects from pre-contract to completion, and that all NCRs are appropriately investigated and closed
  • Champion Carbon reduction strategies in line with our Responsible Business objectives and lead on creating a net zero engineering culture in line with PAS2080
  • Role model positive leadership behaviours and drive a culture of engineering excellence
  • Manage and maintain effective project engineering resources and team profile to support bid and delivery stages
  • Mentor and coach engineers and technical staff
  • Develop and manage BU specific training for engineering staff

About the Water Aviation and Highways Business Unit

Our Water team designs, builds, and maintains vital UK water infrastructure, ensuring secure water supply and wastewater services. We work with major water companies to create resilient facilities, reduce flood risks, and improve environmental outcomes. Currently, we participate in the Welsh Water AMP7 and AMP8 frameworks and have secured projects with Wessex Water for the next five years. These long-term framework agreements are part of a national £88 billion investment, requiring a collaborative and agile approach to meet the industry's challenges. We are also actively bidding works with Other Water and Environment Frameworks.

Our Highways team delivers comprehensive services, from major national projects to local schemes, improving road journeys for millions daily. With expertise in tunnelling, bridges, and more, we provide end-to-end project support, including design, integration, and construction. Current projects include concrete road replacements for National Highways and the Scheme Delivery Framework again for National Highways.

Our Aviation Business has secured a new Framework with Gatwick Airport and looking for other opportunities.
