Connecting people, places, and communities through innovation and responsible infrastructure. Morgan Sindall Infrastructure Energy SMT Role – Commercial Director, Energy.

Overview

We’re looking for a Commercial Director to play a pivotal role in shaping the future growth and commercial maturity of our Energy division. This is a senior leadership position, working as a trusted partner to the Managing Director, with significant influence over strategy, culture, and long-term performance. This role is ideal for an established commercial leader from the energy, infrastructure, or construction sectors who brings modern, evolved leadership. You’ll be confident moving away from directive, controlling approaches — instead creating an environment where people, teams, and the business can thrive. With strong intuition, sound judgement, and the credibility to challenge and support at the highest level, you’ll help lead the division through its next phase of growth. If you’re motivated by developing talent, evolving commercial strategy, and building a sustainable, values-led business, we’d welcome your application.

The Opportunity

Reporting to Peter Kirk, Managing Director – Energy, you’ll act as his right-hand partner and trusted advisor, supporting and constructively challenging to achieve the best outcomes for the division. You’ll hold full commercial responsibility across the contract lifecycle, from pre-contract strategy through to post-contract delivery, while evolving the commercial function to support rapid, sustainable growth. Succeeding a highly respected predecessor, this role offers the opportunity to build on a strong legacy while shaping the future. Operating within a decentralised business model that values local autonomy, you’ll help drive greater cohesion, shared success, and long-term resilience across the division.

What You’ll Do

  • Commercial Leadership & Strategy – Own and evolve the Energy commercial strategy, ensuring it supports growth, value creation, and long-term sustainability across the portfolio.
  • Pre- & Post-Contract Excellence – Provide full commercial oversight across the contract lifecycle, devolving responsibility effectively while maintaining strong governance and control.
  • Leadership & Culture – Create a high-performance, modern commercial function by investing in people, developing talent, and moving away from directive, zero-sum behaviours.
  • Strategic Partnering – Act as a trusted advisor to the Managing Director, contributing to divisional strategy, decision-making, and future planning.
  • Customer & Market Insight – Bring deep understanding of regulated, public sector, infrastructure, or construction clients, shaping commercial approaches that align with customer needs.
  • Supply Chain & Relationships – Build and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with supply chain partners, including Tier 2 contractors, to drive mutual success.
  • Growth Enablement – Prepare the leadership team and commercial function for rapid growth, balancing autonomy with the need for greater cohesion and consistency.

What We’re Looking For

  • An established, highly capable commercial leader within the energy, infrastructure, or construction sectors.
  • Proven experience leading teams through significant growth and transformation.
  • Full commercial responsibility across pre- and post-contract environments.
  • A modern, collaborative leadership style that inspires, develops, and empowers others.
  • Strong strategic thinking, with the confidence to evolve commercial approaches and challenge constructively.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills, both internally and externally.
  • A values-driven leader committed to responsible business, community impact, and long-term success.

What’s in It for You

  • A senior, high-impact leadership role at the heart of a growing Energy division.
  • The opportunity to shape commercial strategy, culture, and capability for the future.
  • Close partnership with the Managing Director and the wider senior leadership team.
  • A values-led, decentralised organisation evolving towards greater shared success.
  • The chance to build on a strong legacy while leaving your own lasting impact.

If you’re a commercially astute, people-focused leader ready to help shape the next chapter of our Energy business, we’d love to hear from you. Apply now and help power a more sustainable future with us.
