The 4D Planner is responsible for developing and managing integrated construction schedules within a 4D modelling environment to support efficient project delivery. The role combines programme planning with digital modelling to coordinate construction activities, identify risks, and resolve clashes or sequencing issues. Working closely with project managers, project planners, construction teams, contractors, and stakeholders, the 4D Planner integrates multiple project schedules into a comprehensive model, monitors progress against key milestones, and reports on performance against the project baseline. The 4D Planner enables the democratisation of the project plan, ensuring the coordination between each responsible party is upheld. The role also supports the adoption of digital planning tools and ensures that planning standards, BIM processes, and safety considerations are embedded within the project planning approach.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain a detailed 4D model and associated project plans for the Delivery Team, in accordance with client requirements and within Morgan Sindall scope.
- Take contractor and third-party programmes and integrate them into a comprehensive 4D model, identifying interface issues and opportunities, monitoring the critical path and key milestones, and flagging changes that require mitigative action.
- Champion the democratisation of programme ownership across the project team — the 4D model is managed by the post-holder but owned by the Project Manager and actively supported by the engineers; this role is responsible for embedding that culture.
- Work with Project Managers and engineers to ensure they engage directly with the programme, understand their accountabilities, and do not defer planning responsibilities to the planning function.
- Generate accurate reports stating the position of projects, showing deviation from baselines and month-on-month comparisons.
- Ensure planning standards and 4D modelling requirements are maintained and that data exchanges are adhered to.
- Work with Project Managers, Construction Managers, and SHEQ teams to coordinate and maximise use of the 4D model, ensuring it is a live and trusted tool for decision-making.
- Ensure a safety-first approach is embedded in all planning outputs, both in respect of construction sequencing and the wider working environment.
- Present project plans, risks, and issues to the project team and external stakeholders to support effective engagement and informed decision-making.
To thrive in the role you will have
- A formal qualification in civil engineering, construction, or a related discipline is desirable but not essential; equivalent qualifications or experience in 3D design, animation, game design, or CGI are equally relevant to this role.
- Demonstrable proficiency in Synchro 4D or equivalent 4D planning/visualisation software; certification is advantageous but not required.
- Demonstrable proficiency in 3D modelling tools such as Revit, SketchUp, 3DS Max, or comparable software, including tools common in game design or CGI environments (e.g. Unreal Engine, Blender).
- Demonstrable experience in producing high-quality animation or visualisation outputs.
- A basic understanding of BIM principles and model-based data sharing between project stakeholders.
- Familiarity with traditional planning tools such as Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project is beneficial but not expected at this level — a working awareness is sufficient, with development supported in role.
- Some exposure to Power BI or similar data visualisation tools is advantageous.
- Good communication skills, with the confidence to participate in meetings and workshops with internal teams, clients, and contractors.
- Competent in Microsoft Office.
- Ability to manage own workload and deliver accurately and on time.
- Some supervision skills and the ability to guide and train peers in use of the model.
- Ability to manage a given list of tasks independently and report perceived issues as they occur.
- Ability to work well either alone or as part of a team.
- 3 or more years’ experience in Major project delivery with knowledge of construction practices and standards and basic logistical understanding.
- Good writing, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to handle situations and problems. Know when to ask for help and guidance.
