Morgan Law are seeking an experienced and highly credible Interim Head of Employee Relations to join a large NHS organisation in London during a period of significant organisational change and transformation. Reporting to the Director of Workforce, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for the Employee Relations function, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, responsive and legally compliant HR services across the Trust. You will lead on complex workforce matters, support organisational change programmes, and work closely with senior leaders, staff-side representatives and key stakeholders to foster positive employment relations. This is an excellent opportunity for an accomplished ER professional to make a significant impact within a complex and fast-paced healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Employee Relations team, ensuring effective delivery of ER services across the organisation.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance on complex employee relations matters, including disciplinary, grievance, capability, attendance management and whistleblowing cases.
  • Support and lead workforce change programmes, restructures, organisational redesign and consultation processes.
  • Develop and implement ER strategies, policies and procedures in line with NHS best practice and employment legislation.
  • Build strong relationships with Trade Union representatives and staff-side organisations to maintain constructive industrial relations.
  • Advise Executive Directors, senior managers and clinical leaders on high-risk and sensitive workforce issues.
  • Monitor ER trends and performance metrics, identifying opportunities for improvement and risk mitigation.
  • Ensure compliance with NHS policies, employment law and regulatory requirements.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate:

  • Significant senior-level Employee Relations experience within the NHS or a large, complex public sector organisation.
  • Proven experience leading complex ER casework and workforce change programmes.
  • Strong knowledge of UK employment legislation and NHS workforce frameworks.
  • Experience working effectively with Trade Unions and managing industrial relations matters.
  • Excellent stakeholder management, influencing and negotiation skills.
  • The ability to operate strategically while remaining hands‑on and delivery-focused.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience managing and developing HR teams.

Essential Requirements

  • CIPD Level 7 qualification (or equivalent experience).
  • Extensive Employee Relations leadership experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of supporting organisational change and transformation.
  • Strong understanding of NHS terms and conditions, policies and workforce challenges.
