Overview Morgan Hunt are currently working with a Public Sector Financial Institution in their search for an Interim Senior Legal Counsel to join their Legal Team on a temporary basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced financial services lawyer to work at the intersection of government, financial markets and public policy, supporting a wide range of complex and high-profile legal matters.
Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you will provide strategic and operational legal advice across a diverse portfolio of work. The role has a strong focus on financial markets and financial services law, supporting activities relating to debt capital markets, money markets, derivatives, lending and fund management. You will work closely with senior stakeholders across the organisation, advising on both day-to-day legal matters and longer-term strategic initiatives.
A key part of the role will involve drafting and negotiating complex financial documentation, including market-facing agreements and counterparty arrangements. You will also monitor regulatory developments across the financial services sector, identifying potential impacts and advising on appropriate responses. Alongside this, you will provide legal support across a wider range of matters, including commercial contracts, procurement, disputes, public law and governance issues.
This is a highly varied role requiring strong technical expertise, sound judgement and the ability to deliver pragmatic, outcome-focused advice in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will be comfortable working autonomously while collaborating closely with colleagues across legal, risk and operational functions.
The successful candidate will be a qualified solicitor or barrister with significant experience advising on financial services, financial markets or capital markets matters. Experience within the public sector, government, financial institutions or regulatory environments would be advantageous, although candidates from private practice with relevant expertise are also encouraged to apply.
Job Details:
- Location: Hybrid - 60% in London office
- Rate: £400.00 - £450.00 per day (Umbrella)
- Contract Type: Temporary (until March 2027)
- Hours: Full-Time
- Clearance: SC Clearance required (or willingness to obtain upon appointment)
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic and operational legal advice across financial markets, lending, fund management and treasury-related activities.
- Draft, review and negotiate complex financial documentation and counterparty agreements.
- Support debt capital markets, money market and derivatives activity.
- Monitor financial services regulatory developments and advise on legal and operational impacts.
- Provide legal support on commercial contracts, procurement and wider organisational projects.
- Advise on public law, governance and regulatory matters as required.
- Support the procurement, instruction and management of external legal advisers.
- Contribute to the development of legal processes, documentation and knowledge management resources.
- Work closely with senior stakeholders across legal, risk and operational teams.
Candidate Profile:
- Qualified solicitor or barrister with significant post-qualification experience.
- Strong expertise in financial services, financial markets, capital markets, treasury or banking law.
- Experience drafting and negotiating complex financial agreements.
- Ability to provide pragmatic, commercially aware and risk-based legal advice.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Experience operating within complex regulatory environments.
- Strong analytical skills, judgement and attention to detail.
- Able to work independently while contributing positively within a collaborative team environment.
- Public sector, regulatory or government experience desirable but not essential.
