Our client within the Education Sector is seeking an experienced Moodle Developer for a 6-month fixed-term contract. This role will sit within the Information & Digital Group and will play a key part in enhancing, supporting and developing the University's core Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and wider digital learning ecosystem. The Moodle Developer will take technical ownership of key systems including Moodle, Echo360, and complementary learning and assessment tools. You will be responsible for developing new functionality, troubleshooting issues, ensuring seamless integrations, and collaborating with academic and professional services stakeholders to deliver a robust, user-centred digital learning experience. This is a hands‑on, varied position where you will contribute ideas, develop scalable and well‑documented code, and work closely with both internal teams and external suppliers.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert technical support for Moodle, Echo360, and related digital learning tools.
- Investigate and resolve escalated issues (ServiceNow/Jira), applying clean and effective fixes.
- Develop, test and maintain high‑quality web applications and backend/frontend services.
- Create and support Moodle plugins, integrations and custom features.
- Monitor systems, respond to alerts, and ensure platform stability, confidentiality and data integrity.
- Produce clear technical documentation, process notes and operational guidance.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify recurring issues and deliver root‑cause fixes to improve system reliability.
- Recommend and prepare Change Requests; represent changes at CAB when required.
- Lead risk management activities for the lifecycle of supported systems.
- Ensure learning systems documentation, workflows and business continuity processes remain accurate and up‑to‑date.
- Contribute to and champion best practice across development, testing and continuous integration.
Project Delivery
- Act as the technical lead or key contributor on medium and large‑scale digital learning projects.
- Provide expert guidance on requirements, risks, solution design and integration strategy.
- Develop high‑quality service components for inclusion in the University's service catalogue.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to stakeholders with varying technical backgrounds.
Experience
Essential
- Strong technical knowledge of Moodle (plugin development, integrations, configuration) and Echo360.
- Confident working with PHP, CSS, JavaScript, NodeJS and jQuery (Python desirable).
- Solid understanding of Linux command line tools and system administration.
- Experience designing and implementing REST APIs.
- Familiarity with Agile development, version control best practice, continuous integration and test‑driven development.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues to non‑technical audiences.
- Strong problem solving, analytical and diagnostic capability.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritise workloads and operate as part of a collaborative team.
- High‑quality documentation skills and a commitment to outstanding user support.
Desirable
- PRINCE2 Foundation or equivalent project management qualification.
- ITIL4 Foundation or equivalent.
- Experience working in a Higher Education digital/learning technologies environment.
- Knowledge of Azure cloud environments.
