The Commercial Vehicle Technician Level 3 – Engineering & Surveying is responsible for the inspection, servicing, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of commercial vehicles and associated equipment to ensure operational safety, reliability, and compliance with industry standards and legal requirements. The postholder will undertake planned and reactive maintenance activities, support engineering operations, conduct technical inspections, and contribute to maintaining a safe and efficient fleet operation. The role requires a skilled technician with strong diagnostic abilities and a commitment to high-quality workmanship and customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
- Carry out servicing, repairs, and maintenance on commercial vehicles, plant, and associated equipment.
- Diagnose faults using appropriate diagnostic equipment and technical manuals.
- Undertake mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic repairs.
- Conduct preventative maintenance inspections and safety checks.
- Ensure vehicles meet DVSA and roadworthiness standards.
- Complete MOT preparation work and support compliance inspections.
- Engineering & Technical Duties
- Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and manufacturer guidelines.
- Carry out engineering inspections and technical assessments of fleet vehicles and equipment.
- Support engineering and surveying teams with technical information and reporting.
- Assist in identifying recurring mechanical issues and recommending corrective actions.
- Ensure all repairs are completed efficiently and to manufacturer and organisational standards.
- Compliance & Safety
- Adhere to health and safety legislation, workshop procedures, and safe systems of work.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and job sheets.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding waste disposal, oils, and hazardous materials.
- Use workshop tools, lifting equipment, and diagnostic systems safely and correctly.
- Participate in risk assessments and toolbox talks where required.
- Teamwork & Service Delivery
- Work collaboratively with engineers, surveyors, drivers, and operational teams.
- Provide technical advice and support to colleagues and customers where appropriate.
- Support emergency breakdown response and reactive repairs when required.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping within the workshop and work areas.

Essential Qualifications
- Level 3 qualification in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance & Repair, Commercial Vehicle Engineering, or equivalent recognised qualification.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Qualifications
- HGV Licence (Class 1 or 2).
- IRTEC Accreditation.
- MOT Tester qualification for commercial vehicles.
- Health & Safety qualification such as IOSH or equivalent.
Essential Experience
- Proven experience working as a Commercial Vehicle Technician or HGV Technician.
- Experience diagnosing and repairing mechanical and electrical faults on commercial vehicles.
- Experience carrying out routine servicing and inspections.
- Experience working within engineering, transport, fleet, or workshop environments.
