Our client, a major player in the logistics and supply chain sector, is looking for a dedicated and experienced Warehouse Operations Supervisor to oversee their busy distribution centre in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, UK. This role specifically focuses on the night shift operation, ensuring the efficient and accurate handling of goods, management of warehouse staff, and adherence to health and safety standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in warehouse management, excellent leadership capabilities, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will be responsible for motivating your team, optimizing workflows, and ensuring that operational targets are met consistently throughout the shift.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of warehouse operatives during the night shift, ensuring all tasks are completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Manage the receiving, storing, picking, packing, and dispatching of goods according to established procedures.
  • Monitor warehouse performance metrics and implement measures to improve productivity, reduce errors, and minimize costs.
  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, conducting regular risk assessments and promoting a safe working environment.
  • Train, mentor, and develop warehouse staff, providing clear instructions and constructive feedback.
  • Operate warehouse equipment safely and effectively, and ensure all equipment is well-maintained.
  • Manage stock inventory, conduct cycle counts, and resolve discrepancies.
  • Liaise with other departments, including transport and customer service, to ensure smooth operations and timely deliveries.
  • Handle operational issues and emergencies, implementing appropriate solutions to minimize disruption.
  • Maintain accurate records of warehouse activities, including goods in/out, stock levels, and staff performance.
  • Conduct team briefings at the start and end of shifts to communicate objectives and feedback.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the warehouse operations.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven experience (minimum 2-3 years) in a warehouse or logistics environment, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or team leader role.
  • Experience of working night shifts is essential.
  • Strong understanding of warehouse management systems (WMS) and inventory control principles.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to motivate and manage a team effectively.
  • Knowledge of health and safety procedures within a warehouse setting.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Forklift truck license (counterbalance, reach) is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • A proactive and problem-solving attitude.

Hours: 4 on 2 off shift pattern working 10pm-6.30am (37.33 hours per week)

Here’s What You Can Expect To Be Doing as our Warehouse Operative:

  • Working to deadlines unloading products from the trailers and loading onto 3.5t and 7.5t delivery vehicles using the correct process.
  • Assigning the products to the correct delivery vehicles using pick sheets.
  • Checking that trailers going back to Head Office are loaded correctly.
  • Using the correct manual handling techniques and safe systems of work in line with H&S training.
  • Comfortable with handling large appliances and completing heavy manual handling.
  • Limit any potential damages by handling appliances in line with training.
  • Reporting any accidents, product issues or damages.
  • Other general warehouse responsibilities.
