Under the direction of the Director of Accounting, the Senior Financial Analyst (SFA) supports core accounting, financial reporting, and treasury functions. The SFA prepares accurate financial statements and related analyses in accordance with Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE), and provides technical accounting support where US GAAP knowledge is required, including cross‑border reporting, stakeholder requirements, tax matters, and transaction analysis. This role collaborates across the organization to strengthen month‑end close processes, enhance reporting quality, improve efficiencies, and maintain the integrity of financial data. Key relationships include the Director of Accounting, internal stakeholders across operations, and external auditors and tax authorities, as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations
- Prepare accurate financial statements and supporting analyses in accordance with ASPE.
- Prepare monthly and year‑end financial statements, schedules, and working papers.
- Perform month‑end variance analysis and provide clear explanations of results.
- Complete rate of return and related profitability analyses to support decision‑making.
- Support annual budgeting and periodic forecasting with analysis and reporting.
- Accounting Operations (Close & General Ledger)
- Support month‑end close through journal entries, account reconciliations, and analysis.
- Prepare monthly journal entries, accruals, and recurring entries.
- Reconcile key accounts and investigate variances identified through month‑end analysis.
- Maintain close schedules and working papers to support timely financial statement preparation.
- Provide analysis to support budgeting and forecast updates, as needed.
- Financial Systems
- Act as a subject matter expert in testing financial system changes and validating processes and documentation before, during, and after upgrades.
- Recommend improvements to financial system reports to meet new data requirements, including preparing report specifications and testing outputs.
- Special Projects & Other Duties
- Participate in special projects and divisional initiatives, completing deliverables within established timelines.
- Drive continuous improvement by drafting and maintaining procedures, desk guides, and documentation for assigned areas.
- Provide functional advice, guidance, and training to financial analysts as needed.
- Back up other positions as required.
- Ensure filing of corporate documents in accordance with prescribed standards.
- Perform other related duties as requested by the Director of Accounting.
Qualifications
- Education
- Undergraduate degree in Commerce, Accounting, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- CPA designation and/or public accounting experience preferred.
- Experience
- 3+ years of progressive experience in financial analysis and/or accounting within a computerized accounting environment.
- Proven experience applying ASPE in a private company financial reporting environment, and the ability to research and document technical accounting positions.
- Working knowledge of US GAAP is considered an asset.
- Experience with large‑scale financial systems/ERPs.
- Intermediate proficiency with spreadsheets and word processing tools (Excel and Word).
- Demonstrated ability to prepare financial analysis, develop recommendations, and apply strong analytical skills.
