We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as our Operations Manager – Western Region for the WP Group, reporting to the Head of Operations. This key position within the Operations Management Team will manage and lead a range of fuel distribution capabilities across the Western Region (Depots/Fuels Terminals).

The Operations Manager Western Region leads a diverse operational team at depots/fuels terminals in the South West, covering depots in Hythe, Ringwood and Chilbolton along with a fuels terminal operation out of Westerleigh. The role will also manage the 24/7 refuelling contract within the Fawley refinery. They ensure effective management through engagement and communication with stakeholders.
The manager supports and oversees a team of 25 drivers and a transport supervisor, focusing on safety, compliance, and operational excellence. They hold responsibility for regulatory compliance, adherence to safety standards and delivering high levels of customer service. Familiarity with FORS is beneficial.
The manager drives productivity, data analysis, and decision-making to reduce lost productivity and underperformance. They make informed freight budget decisions and utilise performance data to achieve KPIs and support business growth. All of which is delivered in an Always Safe environment with a commitment to engagement and collaboration across the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct line management of the WP Group Transport Supervisor for the region
- Maintain 100% compliance with the O Licence Undertakings as a named Transport Manager, including seeking to exceed DVSA KPI standards
- Manage and lead drivers and resources across the western region to ensure effective operation for customers
- Work with the Planning team to deliver optimal use of resources to maximise Productivity and minimise Lost Productivity through key Root Causes Analysis
- Provide Operations and Customer support to both drivers, other Managers and Customer Services, as required
- Champion SHEQ and provide leadership through the SHEQ committee
- Have a clear acumen for Risk Management, Safety, Quality, Cost Control and time constraints to ensure innovative and sustainable solution to ensure Delivered in Full on Time
- Develop an understanding of available fleet and driver technology to deliver efficient operations that enhance operational capability and efficiencies through accurate data
- Deliver training across the depots and terminals and the wider business in relation to Inductions, Professional Development, Tool Box talks and promoting a Safety Culture
- Lead the management of incidents and investigations, including Near Misses and Complaints, with Root Cause Analysis and implementation of Sustainable Corrective Actions
- Support the planned physical growth of operations. This may include new depot and terminal locations, plus the supporting operational infrastructure
- Support the 24/7 operation through participation in the OOH and Morning Calls roster with other Operational colleagues
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes
- In depth knowledge of the Goods Vehicle (Licensing of Operators) Act 1995
- Demonstrable experience of managing transport operations and fuels operations
- Experience with modern vehicle technologies
- Ability to demonstrate influential communication
- Hold recent Certificate of Professional competence in National Road Haulage Operations
- HGV and ADR experience
- Computer literate
- Strong demonstrable organisation and planning skills
- Full driving licence
- Positive attitude, pro-active, strong communication skills, ability to work under pressure.

- Strong administrative capability
- Self-driven with strong Communication skills to support continuous improvement initiatives and build customer relationships
- Highly resilient in high pressure situations.

Schedule
Monday to Friday General core hours of hrs (with 1 hour unpaid lunch break). Be prepared to support the 24/7 operation through participation in the OOH roster with other managers.
Work Location: Hythe depot with regular travel to all locations and Head Office in Southampton. Business mileage compensation included.
