The post holder is responsible for assessment of care needs of patients, planning programmes of care, implementation and evaluation of these programmes with direct supervision. The role includes management responsibility for the ward, supervising junior members of staff, and independently delivering specialist ophthalmic nursing care within the theatre environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform scrub practitioner tasks in the operating department, following all checks and procedures as set out in National/Theatre Policy.
- Assist senior staff and multidisciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining clinical standards and staff development within the theatre team.
- Carry out specialist ophthalmic nursing procedures in scrub and provide care and support in the peri‑operative pathway.
- Document all clinical work independently, ensuring safe patient care.
- Provide cover in areas specified by training and competence, demonstrating flexibility.
- Mentor junior staff and support their professional development.
- Participate in ongoing professional development through in‑house and external courses.
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered with NMC or HCPC (current professional registration).
- Registered practitioner (RGN/ODP).
- Previous theatre/scrub experience.
- Previous ophthalmology experience.
- Completion of preceptorship/mentorship (desirable).
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development.
