This is an exciting opportunity to work in a modern building specifically dedicated to ophthalmology. The post holder will be responsible for the organisation and management of Moorfields at Stratford Granta House 15-19 Broadway, London E15 4BQ, day care and outpatient clinic. The post holder will be accountable for the overall provision of excellent nursing care and will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams in both clinical areas. She or he will lead the effective running of the department, which consists of Outpatients, Diagnostic hubs, Day Care, and Pre Assessment, whilst ensuring the safety and well-being of patients and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person-centred care principles.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the department as an expert ophthalmic clinical practitioner, ensuring that staff have the appropriate skills necessary to care for the designated patient group.
  • Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and discharge of patient care, including history taking, physical examination, and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
  • Lead on the provision of evidence-based nursing practice.
  • Be responsible for the assessment of care needs, development, implementation, and evaluation of high standards of nursing care.
  • Be conversant with Trust Policies and guidelines and ensure compliance.
  • Investigate and respond to complaints, both written and verbal, and report findings back to the Matron.
  • Work clinically 50% of the week and as required, providing clinical expertise to facilitate the safe and effective delivery of care while maintaining your own clinical practice.
  • Facilitate a high-quality, cost-effective specialist service through monitoring and audit, and other quality initiatives agreed by the Trust.
  • Lead on and participate in key developments relating to the ophthalmic specialty so that high-quality patient-focused services are promoted.
  • Attend and participate in multi-professional team meetings.
  • Carry out audits, present and share results locally and nationally.
  • Manage local budget, staffing, e-roster, and staff management appropriate to the level.
  • Ensure a learning environment and specialist training is provided for all staff and evidence-based practice is incorporated and utilised in the teaching environment.
  • Keep mandatory staff training up-to-date.
  • Take overall responsibility for the development of student nurses and others during their allocation to the service.
  • Act as an advisor to junior staff in their roles as mentors, assessors and preceptors.
  • Support and participate in education and training programmes and develop programmes as required.
  • Assist the Matron in developing a culture that is challenging, stimulating, rewarding, and supportive.
  • Develop and sustain own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with nursing revalidation requirements and maintain a professional profile.
  • Undertake annual appraisals for staff and ensure own appraisal and PDP is current.
  • Take an active role in performance management of staff when necessary.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience – Essential Criteria

  • NMC Registered Nurse – Part 1 Adult Ophthalmic qualified nurse for at least 5 years
  • MSc in Ophthalmic Nursing

Desirable Criteria

  • Extended skills e.g. IVT injector

Skills & Experience – Essential Criteria (Band 6 Ophthalmology nursing)

  • At least 5 years as Band 6 in Ophthalmology nursing
  • Experience in managing an Outpatient ophthalmic unit

Skills & Experience – Essential Criteria (HR & Management)

  • Experience in dealing with Staff HR issues such as staff sickness absence, e-Rostering, etc.
