Job Overview

We have an excellent opportunity at Moorfields South at St George’s and its satellites (QMR and Nelson Health Centre) for a full time job Band 4 Senior Ophthalmic Technician.

This senior ophthalmic technician staff is part of our plan to lead our diagnostic hub at Nelson Health Centre. The senior ophthalmic technician will be supported by our Ophthalmic Vision Science Practitioner and Nursing staff leading on providing the quality technical skill on our Division.

The post holder should have significant ophthalmic technician experience in a health care setting.

Main duties of the job

To work towards the development and delivery of high standards of patient care by using clearly defined care pathways. The role also requires supporting MDT.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

• Deliver clinical and therapeutic care to ophthalmic patients as required within set protocols within the scope of the role.
• Perform assessment when appropriate, plan and deliver high standards of care.
• Provide compassionate, safe and effective care and support to patients in a range of care settings.
• Develop, implement and evaluate individual care pathways, using models, protocols, practical and theoretical knowledge under appropriate delegation from a registered nurse.
• Support patients to improve and maintain their mental, physical, behavioural health and well‑being.
• Care for a patient’s nursing needs whilst promoting comfort and well‑being, ensuring their personal and social needs are met.
• The post holder will be expected to continue and maintain clinical skills such as assisting in minor ops, intravitreal injection and emergency treatments in acute eye service. Undertake and perform clinical skills to enhance the delivery of patient care, measure and record specific ophthalmic vital signs such as Visual Acuity, Visual Fields, OCT including dilation of pupils by administering eye drops and measurement of intra ocular pressure using various methods. Taking and recording of vital signs such as Blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration and blood glucose measurement.
• Prioritise and manage own workload, recognising where elements of care can safely be delegated to other colleagues, carers and family members.
• Provide and receive sensitive information concerning a patient’s medical condition.
• Work collaboratively with other MDT members and engage with agencies and community teams to ensure a safe, individualised approach to the admission and discharge of patients.

Education & Qualifications

Essential criteria

• Nursing Associate Degree or Equivalent experience of current post/practice
• Foundation Degree NVQ Level 4

Desirable criteria

• Ophthalmic qualification/experience

Knowledge/Experience

Essential criteria

• Basic knowledge and understanding of ophthalmic anatomy and physiology
• Knowledge of current clinical and ophthalmic technician practice issues
• Experience working with photographic equipment, computers, data handling, and interpretation of results.

Desirable criteria

• Knowledge of Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance
