This is a 6 month fixed term post (0.6FTE) working as part of a research programme dedicated to improving detection of cortical visual impairment funded by the Medical Research Council, Vivensa Foundation, Glaucoma UK and The National Brain Appeal. The programme focuses on improving detection and diagnosis of cortical visual impairment due to posterior cortical atrophy. The post‑holder will participate in the validation of a cortical visual screening test (Graded Incomplete Letters Test; GILT) and its development for use across clinical settings.
Key tasks include:
- Organising testing across Moorfields Eye Hospital clinics.
- Conducting GILT evaluation with additional standardised assessments.
- Developing and conducting interviews with patients and professionals regarding experience of testing and clinical pathways.
- Ensuring accurate data collection with quality control.
- Supporting data analysis.
The holder will complete the NIHR Associate Principal Investigator programme during the contract, supervised by the study team.
Main Duties of the Job:
- Liaise with Local PIs and the NIHR Clinical Research Facility to arrange screening assessment.
- Prepare patient documentation (information sheets and consent forms).
- Troubleshoot when things don’t go to plan.
- Deal with participant issues/concerns sympathetically and escalating where required.
- Report participant welfare issues and relevant feedback to appropriate investigators.
- Develop interviews and surveys regarding experience of cortical visual testing and relevant pathways.
- Maintain electronic data entry: input and manage study patient data, provide quality control of data, and complete intermittent reports on study recruitment status.
- Test participants: administer the Graded Incomplete Letters Test (GILT) and standard visual function tests; analyse test, clinical and biomarker data.
Teaching, Research and Development:
- Provide teaching on topics related to the post holder’s work as requested.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary research projects and, where opportunities arise, assist in preparation and analysis of data for publications, presentations at conferences and internal meetings.
General Duties:
- Ensure the highest standard of record keeping, maintaining accurate, complete, up‑to‑date records.
- Maintain confidentiality as applicable.
- Attend and contribute to departmental, institutional and other relevant meetings.
- Act in accordance with professional standards and this duty’s policies.

Person Specification:
Education / Qualifications
- Essential criteria: Registered with the General Optical Council.
- Desirable criteria: Member of the College of Optometrists. Post‑graduate degree with substantial research component (e.g., MSc, MPhil).
Experience
- Essential criteria: Experience assessing visual function in patients with visual impairment. Broad understanding of the developing roles of the ophthalmic professions within primary, secondary & tertiary care.
- Desirable criteria: Previous experience conducting patient or professional interviews, questionnaire‑based and/or service evaluation/improvement projects.
Knowledge
- Essential criteria: Knowledge of the central role research plays in patient care in the NHS.
- Desirable criteria: Further training in research methods (e.g., statistical analysis and/or qualitative (thematic) analysis).
Other Requirements:
The role requires proof of eligibility to work in the UK, completion of a satisfactory DBS disclosure and two references. The post holder must hold a contract with Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust which requires a DBS. No visa sponsorship is offered.
