We are seeking an experienced Postdoctoral research fellow to join our multidisciplinary team to accelerate ophthalmic research using INSIGHT, the world’s largest ophthalmic bio-resource. This post involves working with a range of stakeholders to develop communication strategies, conduct qualitative and mixed methods research, generate data, analyse findings, and deliver public engagement. The post‑holder will be supported to play an active role in the analysis of data from this study, and to assist with writing up reports for publication and dissemination. The focus will be on applying stakeholder insights to guide design, ethics, linkage of research and healthcare data, and prioritisation of data analyses.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
Strategic Engagement & Governance
- Patient Representation: Support the recruitment of a diverse range of additional patient representatives from across London, Birmingham, and new partner sites like Sunderland Eye Infirmary.
- Governance Support: Support the participation of patient representatives within the Data Trust Advisory Board (DataTAB) and the Partnership Steering Group to provide oversight for data access requests.
- Policy Development: Iterate and deliver clearly defined role descriptions and frameworks for patient representatives, ensuring remuneration aligns with NIHR payment guidance.
Campaign Leadership & Communications
- Data Saves Sight Campaign: Support the national "Data Saves Sight" campaign, developing materials in multiple languages (e.g., Gujarati) to reach underserved communities.
- Point‑of‑Care Messaging: Co‑produce digital notice board content and patient correspondence with focus groups to educate hospital staff and patients on the benefits of data participation.
- Accessibility: Ensure all research communications comply with Accessibility Information Standards and best practices for visually impaired individuals.
Equity & Inclusion Research
- Health Data Poverty: Conduct research into "Equity Risks" in AI, exploring how problem selection and dataset generation might inadvertently exclude minoritised subgroups or underserved regions.
- Outreach Modelling: Deploy community outreach models to influence attitudes toward health data research in "global majority" populations and faith groups.
- Impact Monitoring: Establish iterative PPIE feedback loops and measurable outcomes to report annually on how public input has influenced project decisions.
National Onboarding & Sustainability
- Onboarding Toolkit: Co‑develop a PPIE Toolkit for the "onboarding pack," providing a blueprint for new NHS Trusts to establish their own regional public engagement ecosystems.
- Researcher Training: Deliver training to researchers on the benefits of using diverse datasets.

- Experience of liaising with patients, healthcare professionals, third sector organisations, and members of the public with diverse interests particularly underserved communities
- Experience of curating data for Artificial Intelligence foundation models internationally
- Experience of designing and conducting and evaluating patient and public involvement or public engagement activities
Desirable criteria:
- Knowledge of research ethics and data governance in health research, including (where relevant) issues arising in data linkage and re‑use.
