With more than 2,300 team members and over 700,000 patients seen annually across City Road and 22 networked sites, Moorfields is a global centre of excellence. We are a community focused on kindness, equity and excellence, with partnerships including the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre. From 2027, the brand-new Oriel site in St Pancras, Camden, will unite eye care, research and education under one roof.
Applications are invited for a clinical fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in the Medical Retinal service. We have a number of fellowship posts available for a 12 month fixed term period.
The Clinical Fellowship in the Medical Retinal Service will be divided into 3 fixed rotations. Each rotation biases a sub-specialty of the medical retina service. Fellows will select their top 6 rotations; the service will assign 3 out of the 6 chosen timetables for the 12-month fellowship. Clinical sessions are conducted in clinics organized by the Medical Retinal Service.
Eligibility and terms
- Previous unsupervised retinal laser experience
- Intravitreal injections experience
- Clinical experience; completed higher surgical training in the UK or equivalent
- Outside UK candidates should have equivalence of higher surgical training and at least 12 months work in Ophthalmology
- MRCOphth or equivalent
- Licence to Practise or eligible for GMC registration
Applications via Dual Sponsorship Scheme are encouraged; applications from doctors with personal funding are welcome.
Responsibilities / Schedule
- 8 clinical sessions and 2 research/study/admin sessions per week (Mon–Fri).
- Of the 8 clinical sessions, 2 service sessions per week include Primary Care in Medical Retina, Medical Retina Emergency clinic and intravitreal injection clinic.
- Some weekly clinical sessions may take place at Moorfields satellite sites outside City Road.
- Cataract surgery is not part of the fellowship; opportunities to operate may occur infrequently during the 12 months.
- Attendance at regular MR Fellows Teaching Sessions (approximately 6 one-hour sessions per week), including Fluorescein Angiography Meeting, Electrophysiology Teaching, Uveitis Teaching and Clinical/Research Tutorials.

Education And Qualifications
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- MRCOphth or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration (Licence to Practise) or eligible for GMC Registration
Further Training and Knowledge
- Completion of Specialist Ophthalmology Training or equivalent
- Research interest; research into educational methods
Desirable criteria
- Good Clinical Practice (GCP) course completed in the last two years
Experience
- Teaching, research and clinical experience in Medical Retina; competent in independent intravitreal injections and laser procedures (macular and pan-retinal photocoagulation)
- Desirable: experience of working on commercially sponsored clinical trials as a sub- or co-investigator
