The post holder will assist with the delivery of ophthalmic services at Moorfields, based in Bedford Hospital South Wing. The role involves facilitating excellent nursing care, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, and ensuring the effective operation of out‑patients and day‑care treatment services. The post holder will work to uphold patient safety, wellbeing, dignity and human rights, applying person‑centred care principles.

Main duties of the job:

  • Ensure that the learning environment and specialist training are provided for all staff and that evidence‑based practice is incorporated in the teaching environment.
  • Act as an advisor to junior staff.
  • Support and participate in education and training programmes and help develop training programmes as required.
  • Assist the Nurse Manager, Matron and Sister/Charge Nurse in developing a culture that is challenging, stimulating, rewarding and supportive.
  • Maintain and develop own knowledge, clinical skills and professional awareness in accordance with PREP requirements and maintain a professional profile.
  • Assume responsibility for undertaking annual appraisals for staff and ensure own appraisal and PDP are current.
  • Promote and participate in nursing research to update knowledge and improve clinical practice.
  • Collaborate with the Practice Development Team to develop and implement evidence‑based practice.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of nursing practice guidelines, standards and policies.
  • Participate and contribute to audit and research within the speciality in collaboration with colleagues.
  • Provide support mechanisms for sharing good practice within the department and Trust wide.

Person specification:

  • NMC registration – NMC registered adult nurse.
  • Ophthalmic qualifications or experience: Essential: Minimum of 1 year of ophthalmic experience. Desirable: Working towards a professional ophthalmic qualification.
  • Computer/IT skills – Good computer/IT skills (desirable).
  • Communication and teamwork – Team player with good communication skills (essential).
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the UK, satisfactory DBS disclosure and two references required; visa sponsorship is not offered.
