Senior Paediatric Ophthalmic Nurse in London

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning and provision of specialist ophthalmic nursing advice and will carry out specialist nursing procedures including day‑case surgical patients (NHS and Private). The position provides clinical and managerial leadership to junior staff and students, undertakes research, leads clinical audits and assists the Ward Manager in ensuring the effective running of the ward, clinic and paediatric A&E. Clinical responsibilities include nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions, evaluation, medication administration, emergency recognition, and promotion of patient‑centred care.

Responsibilities

• Independently manage a group of patients within the ophthalmic speciality as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Carry out clinical ophthalmic practice, ensuring evidence‑based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations from admission to discharge.
• Perform history taking, physical examination and request agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
• Assist the nurse‑in‑charge in the effective running of the ward, clinic and Paediatric A&E in accordance with Trust policies.
• Correctly administer prescribed medication for in‑patients and out‑patients.
• Assess and recognise emergencies in the speciality, interpret information, take appropriate action and lead others.
• Advocate for patients, ensuring a patient‑oriented approach to the delivery of care.
• Minimise cross‑infection risk and ensure safe disposal of body fluids.
• Apply advanced clinical skills for complex patients and perform specialist nursing procedures.
• Promote high‑quality clinical care and assist in the development of the specialist service through evidence‑based practice.
• Provide seamless care from referral through assessment, diagnosis, treatment and review.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

• Registered Nurse BSc.
• Mentorship/Practice Assessor qualification.
• Pre‑assessment knowledge and skills.
• Demonstrates evidence of well‑developed clinical practice.
• Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding children and young people.
• Minimum 4 years post‑qualifying paediatric nursing experience.
• Interpersonal relationship/engagement with staff and service users.
• Flexible approach to shift patterns.
• Reliable with good time‑keeping.

Desirable Criteria

• Ophthalmic qualification.
• Paediatric ophthalmic nursing experience.
• Understanding of audit, quality and governance issues.
