The predicted salary is between 37338 - 44962 ÂŁ per year.

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, planning and provision of specialist ophthalmic nursing advice and will carry out specialist nursing procedures, including those for surgical patients. The role includes clinical and managerial leadership of junior staff and students, undertaking research and leading clinical audits within their specialist area. The post holder will assist the Ward Manager in ensuring the effective running of clinics and outpatient activities, promote person‑centred care principles, and cover triaging patient calls, triaging emergency patients and floor‑walking.

Main duties of the job include:

  • Independently manage a group of patients within the ophthalmic speciality whilst working as part of a multidisciplinary team, delivering individualised and personalised direct care.
  • Carry out clinical ophthalmic practice within the designated clinical area, ensuring high quality, current evidence‑based nursing assessment, care planning, implementation, interventions and evaluations for patients from admission through to discharge.
  • Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, including history taking, physical examination and the requesting of agreed diagnostic procedures/clinical investigations.
  • Assist the ward manager in the effective running of the ward in accordance with Trust and local policies and procedures, and be responsible for the correct administration of prescribed medication for in‑patients.
  • Assess and recognise emergencies in the specialty, interpret information, take appropriate action and lead others to do the same.
  • Facilitate a high quality, cost effective specialist service through monitoring and audit and other quality initiatives agreed by the Trust.
  • Identify and intervene where circumstances contribute to an unsafe environment for patients and staff, and bring instances to the attention of the Manager for the area.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an advanced level of assessment skills to determine whether each patient is fit to proceed to surgery, lead on and participate in key developments relating to the ophthalmic speciality so that high quality patient focused services are promoted, and attend and participate in multi‑professional team meetings.
