If yes, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust welcomes applications for the role of MSc dissertation module lead on the UCL MSc Orthoptic (pre-reg) programme, working within a multi-disciplinary team.
The MSc Orthoptics programme has been developed by University College London (UCL), Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in a joint education partnership. The post holder will hold an honorary contract with UCL IoO and be employed by Moorfields Orthoptic Service. The module lead is responsible for the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO) MSc Orthoptic (pre-registration) programme as Module Lead for the Dissertation module. The main purpose of the post is to ensure the successful delivery of the dissertation module, managing dissertation supervisors/allocations, teaching and assessment (marking and feedback).

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The Module Lead is responsible for preparing the dissertation module teaching timetable, allocating supervisors, marking dissertation proposals (with feedback), allocating markers and holding regular meetings with supervisors that include an induction session, marking debriefs and end‑of‑year feedback. They will be the point of contact for all supervisors, addressing queries related to dissertation supervision with support from Programme Leads and administrators where required.
Post Holder Should
- Ensure the effective and efficient delivery, assessment and on-going development of the module, in compliance with UCL procedures and regulations
- Have excellent communication and time management skills to ensure subject matter experts delivering module content are scheduled and supported accordingly
- Be familiar with UCL and the Institute's guidelines, particularly those pertaining to staff and student welfare
- Bring to the attention of the programme leads any concerns relating to the students' academic work or general welfare
Person Specification
Knowledge and experience – Essential criteria:
- Advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of Orthoptics
- Extensive experience in a hospital setting – orthoptic and sub-speciality clinics
- Assessment experience in a clinical or academic setting
Knowledge and experience – Desirable criteria:
- Experience of curriculum development
- Experience of developing protocols and competencies
CPD Essential criteria:
- Evidence beyond CPD of professional development
- Evidence of delivering clinical education
- Experience of delivering clinical education, training and supervision for non-medical professionals at undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Experience of MSc dissertation supervision (or equivalent experience)
Desirable criteria:
- Experience of research and development activities
Registration Essential criteria:
- Current registration with an appropriate professional body, e.g. HCPC, GOC, GMC, NMC
Skills Essential criteria:
- Ability to work under own initiative within agreed parameters
- Ability to work to and meet deadlines
- Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to communicate and work effectively with students, academics and clinicians both written and verbally
- Good verbal communication skills in respect of presentations and teaching
Desirable criteria:
- Experience of working in an academic environment
Qualifications Essential criteria:
- Recognised degree/diploma in an ophthalmic field with considerable postgraduate experience
- Recognised higher degree (or equivalent experience) teaching qualification or working towards obtaining a recognised qualification or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria:
- Evidence of a specific area of relevant research to contribute to evidence-based teaching (MRes/PhD or equivalent experience)
