Locum Consultant Pathologist - Eye Pathology

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Histopathologist to join the team at the Moorfields Department of Eye Pathology, initially on a 6 month locum contract. The department is part of the National Specialist Ophthalmic Pathology Service (NSOPS) and receives a wide range of qualifying ophthalmic samples, as well as serving Private practice, Research and Charitable causes. The role offers flexibility (jobs share, remote reporting, targeted sessions and/or part‑time appointments) to accommodate other interests.

This 6 month Locum post offers 8 Programmed Activities with no formal on‑call or weekend working commitment. The post holder will:

• Provide high quality diagnostic ophthalmic pathology reporting.
• Teach and supervise junior and non‑medical staff, both visiting and permanent.
• Participate in management and service planning; support professional activities including MDT, teaching, CPD, audit and appraisal.
• Contribute to IQC and relevant clinical audits.
• Work in line with health and safety processes and collaborate with the laboratory manager to deliver and improve the service.
• Engage in service improvement projects.

Undertake relevant CPD activities, maintain knowledge of current practice, participate in external QA schemes (NEQAS and BAOP EQA as applicable), attend annual BAOP meetings, and undertake annual appraisal.

May have an honorary or associate appointment at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, depending on activities. Duties include teaching staff in the Department of Eye Pathology and visiting colleagues; support research and collaborative activities; participate in service audits.

• FRCPath or equivalent qualification
• MBBS/MB ChB or equivalent
• Full GMC registration (or eligible within six months of interview)
• UK trained: CCT (or within six months of award by date of interview)
• Non‑UK trained: evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT

• Participation in BAOP EQA scheme

• Thorough training and experience in Histopathology and Cytopathology, particularly Ophthalmic pathology
• Ability to deliver service without direct supervision
• Experience with audits and closure actions

• Attendance at management courses
