Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist- Vitreo-retinal

Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the post of Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with an interest in Vitreo-retinal surgery. The post is based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, City Road and Moorfields at St George's Hospital. The successful candidate will be expected to cover surgical operating lists as the lead surgeon. You will be responsible for the care and management of patients seen in your allocated VR/VRE clinics and operating sessions. You will be required to participate in the VRE on call rota alongside the other consultants.

Main Responsibilities

• Responsibility for the care of Vitreo-retinal patients across admitted and non-admitted pathways.
• Participation in on call rota covering all aspects of Vitreo-retinal emergency work when needed.
• Management of elective theatre lists and outpatient clinics including face-to-face, telephone and virtual reviews.
• Supervision of junior medical staff in the VR/VRE clinics and theatre lists.
• Active participation in both formal and informal clinic teaching.
• Clinical research participation where relevant.

Person Specification – Education / Qualifications

• FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification.
• Full GMC Registration (with a ‘License to Practise’).
• CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent ophthalmic training (or be within 6 months of CCT date).
• Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry.

Desired Criteria – Higher Degree

• MD, PhD or equivalent.

Essential Skills and Abilities

• High degree of clinical & surgical skills in vitreoretinal surgery.
• Track record of developing and submitting applications for research funding.
• Track record of publications in peer‑reviewed scientific & clinical journals.
• Ability to lead & co‑ordinate clinical teams.
• Surgical experience.

Experience

• Experience of teaching at postgraduate levels.
• Extensive experience in the management of all patients with conditions requiring vitreoretinal clinical/surgical knowledge.
• Demonstrable experience of taking a leading role in a research group.
• Evidence of promoting excellence in areas of research.
• Understanding of the key NIHR funding streams for research.
• Experience of public & patient engagement.

Knowledge

• Completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology.
• Fellowship Training in vitreoretinal surgery.
• Extensive knowledge of vitreoretinal conditions.
• Relevant research methods training.
• Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS & UK Higher Education & the possible associated implications for Moorfields/UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.
