This is an exciting opportunity for a Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist within the Adnexal Service at City Road sites on a fixed term basis for 6 months. This consultant post offers 7.875 DCC and 1.5 SPA and a total of 9.375 PAs within the Adnexal service. The post holder will work at City Road within the established adnexal service in both consultant-led clinic and minor ops theatre. A proposed timetable will be agreed with the Service Director and then be incorporated into the successful applicant’s contract which includes participating in the service on-call roster. The timetable/programme may change with time depending on the specialist expertise of the post holder, the needs of the hospital and the service demands. Supervision and teaching of junior staff will be required as well as administrative responsibilities of the ST teaching and training. Main duties of the job

  • The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice.
  • They will need to have experience in the management of oculoplastic, orbital, and lacrimal conditions.
  • The post holder must have completed at least 12 months of a post CCT Ocular-Plastics fellowship.

Performance Management

  • To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, financial management, and operational efficiency.

Medical Staff Management

  • To work with colleagues to ensure junior doctors’ hours are compliant in line with EWTD and New Deal.
  • To ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for junior medical staff.
  • To participate in the recruitment of junior medical staff as and when required.
  • To participate in team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.
  • To be engaged in the process of annual appraisal and revalidation of all doctors in training, Trust doctors, Clinical Fellows and non-consultant grades as delegated by the Clinical Director/Divisional Manager.

Governance

  • To review clinical outcomes in designated area using external benchmarking data where appropriate.
  • Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis and to ensure resulting actions are implemented.
  • To work closely with the Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels in relation to clinical and services developments.
  • To ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.

Strategy and Business Planning

  • To participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the directorate and Trust where appropriate.
  • To represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks/other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Director.

Leadership and Team Working

  • To demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national or local initiatives.
  • To work collaboratively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and Partners as required.
  • To chair regular meetings for the specialties.
  • To resolve conflict and difficult situations through negotiation and discussion, involving appropriate parties.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

  • Essential criteria: FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification. CCT in Ophthalmology or equivalent ophthalmic training (or be within 6 months of CCT date). Full GMC Registration (with a ‘Licence to Practise’). Be on or eligible for the GMC specialist register, or be within 6 months of entry.
  • Desirable criteria: Higher Degree (e.g. MD or PhD).

Experience

  • Essential criteria: One year of fellowship training in Oculoplastic, Lacrimal and Orbital disease or equivalent. Be near to OR completed Higher Specialist Training in Ophthalmology. Awareness of current issues affecting the NHS. Should have received training in clinical supervision as defined by the GMC.
  • Desirable criteria: Experience at Consultant level in oculoplastics, lacrimal and orbital. Should have received training in educational supervision as defined by the GMC. Attended clinical leadership training. Multidisciplinary teaching experience.

Skills And Abilities

  • Essential criteria: Audit & research skills. Excellent teaching & presentation skills. Ability to lead & coordinate teams. Demonstrable competence in oculoplastic within a tertiary centre setting.
  • Desirable criteria: Management skills & experience.
