Responsibilities

  • Line manage staff.
  • Work autonomously, performing corneal collagen cross‑linking surgery after completing competencies.
  • Interpret corneal topography OCT scans and decide on treatment options for patients.
  • Manage and work autonomously in consultant‑led and nurse‑led corneal and external disease clinics as a nurse practitioner, within protocols, with the freedom to initiate interventions.
  • Practice autonomously with a high level of accountability in the direct delivery of high‑quality care, making critical clinical decisions based on advanced clinical skills assessment.
  • Participate and be involved in performing corneal collagen cross‑linking surgery and running post‑operative clinics at least 2–3 sessions per week.
  • Undertake the running of new patient, post‑operative and long‑term monitoring clinics independently, initially with the ANP/consultant and then independently.
  • Lead the establishment of virtual pathways for corneal and external disease patients across the service in conjunction with the Lead Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP).
  • Provide a strong visible leadership presence for the nursing and technician team across the service.
  • Take the lead in developing/implementing evidence‑based practice within the clinical environment with a multi‑professional focus, facilitating, initiating, managing and evaluating change to improve quality of care.
  • Work in partnership with individuals, families and carers, using a range of assessment methods as appropriate (e.g. history‑taking, holistic assessment, identifying risk factors, mental health assessments, requesting, undertaking and/or interpreting diagnostic tests and conducting health needs assessments and organising the appropriate treatment).

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse Degree level.
  • PG Cert: Clinical Ophthalmic Practice or equivalent.
  • Management qualification/experience.

Desirable Criteria

  • Non‑Medical prescribing.
  • MSc or working towards MSc level qualification.
  • Leadership Course.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Minimum 3 years relevant clinical and management experience.
  • Excellent clinical knowledge of Corneal and External Disease service.
  • Advanced slit lamp assessment skills.
  • Experience in Nurse‑led clinic.
  • Experience performing Corneal Cross‑Linking or nurse‑led procedures.
