Clinical Scientist

Job Overview

The Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for the role of Clinical Scientist in the Electrophysiology Department at City Road. This is a fixed‑term position, ending 31 March 2027. The successful applicant will be responsible for diagnosing a wide range of patients using electrophysiological and psychophysical techniques, analysing and documenting results, and supporting the day‑to‑day operation of the clinical and research department.

Main Responsibilities

• Provide diagnostic reports for clinical service patients.
• Carry out various tests on volunteers and patients using a range of electrophysiological and psychophysical methods.
• Analyse and document test results.
• Liaise with referring clinicians regarding test selection and interpretation.
• Contribute to research, including data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation, as directed by the Head of Department.
• Continue learning through attendance at teaching and scientific meetings and maintain professional development.
• Mentor junior technical staff and liaise with other team members.
• Provide teaching and training where appropriate, including formal lectures and tutorials.
• Act as a referee for scientific papers and theses.
• Perform any other duties defined by senior staff.

Qualifications

• A science degree and/or relevant experience.
• A postgraduate science degree or equivalent.

State Registration

• HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.

Experience

• Essential: Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in visual electrophysiology testing.
• Essential: Extensive experience in visual pathway testing of adult and paediatric patients.
• Desirable: Examination and care of patients within the healthcare environment.
• Desirable: Detailed knowledge of visual disorders and their relevance to clinical visual electrophysiology and ophthalmic imaging.

Skills & Abilities

• Good presentation, verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with a wide range of patients and staff.
• Computer literacy in spreadsheet, database and word processing.
• Ability to work individually and as a team member.
• Organisational ability (desirable).
• Advanced keyboard skills (desirable).
• Manual dexterity (desirable).

• Ability to communicate and negotiate with staff, senior managers and patients internally and externally.
• Empathetic attitude to patients.
• Demonstrates high levels of competence (desirable).

Employment Conditions

Employment is subject to proof of eligibility to work in the UK, a satisfactory DBS disclosure and two references. No visa sponsorship is offered unless otherwise stated. The role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) and Order 2020, and a Disclosure and Barring Service submission is required.
