Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Accident & Emergency Ophthalmology. These posts are designed to support Moorfields emergency ophthalmology services at City Road and Moorfields Satellite Sites, while providing opportunities to gain sub-specialist training in a specialty. The posts are offered on a fixed-term basis of 12 months, with sessions predominantly at the A&E department in City Road and potential sessions at Moorfields Satellite sites. Sessions in speciality clinics will also be offered, which will be discussed with candidates based on their preference. Previous fellows have undertaken sessions in Medical Retina/Uveitis, Neuro Ophthalmology, Adnexal, External disease, Vitreoretinal Surgery, Glaucoma (non-surgical). Successful candidates will contribute to 1 in 4 weekend rota in A&E at City Road, as well as some evening shift work in A&E. The majority of sessions will be during standard 9–5 working hours.

There is flexibility which can be tailored to successful candidates for additional specialty clinic experience. A degree of flexibility is also required to maximise the use of available resources across Moorfields sites. There is strong support from consultants in A&E and specialist clinics, with a culture of training and cohesive working. You should have MBBS and FRCOphth/MRCOphth or equivalent, and GMC registration. Full details are in the job description and person specification. All doctors are responsible for maintaining a portfolio of their career over the last five years for GMC Revalidation. If successful, bring supporting information portfolio including recent appraisal documents when joining the Trust. Experience ideally would be at least that of a year 2 or 3 specialist registrar in ophthalmology or equivalent higher surgical training, including a minimum of 18 months as a senior house officer in ophthalmology and one year as pre-registration house officer in medicine and surgery or equivalent. Applicants with varying levels of experience are welcome. The post can be tailored to the needs of the successful candidate.

They should be familiar with UK training or have experience in a similar system, with an interest in clinical research being desirable. The post holder will contribute to the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of general eye conditions at City Road, and sub-specialty sessions under supervision and occasionally on their own at City Road. The clinical sessions provide exposure to urgent presentations across various specialties. The post holder will attend and contribute to: management of urgent cases, supervision of junior medical staff, subspecialty teaching sessions, and opportunities for research and audit.
Duties will include:
- Management of urgent cases presenting at any time during the week
- Supervision of junior staff in the service and participation in teaching
- Development of the Nurse practitioner role – teaching, supervision & education
- Assessment of virtual presentations using the video assessment platform
- Triage of urgent presentations to the A&E Department
- Management of patients within the Urgent Care Clinic
Person specification:
Education / Qualifications Essential criteria:
