The Clinical Engineering Department delivers complete medical equipment management on behalf of Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, covering City Road and all Moorfields Network sites. The post holder provides frontline technical support for clinical areas, contributes to department operations, and aids the transition to the new ORIEL facility.
Main Responsibilities
- Provide day‑to‑day operational support for medical equipment: maintenance, fault resolution, PPM servicing, acceptance testing, training and record keeping.
- Ensure safe and reliable equipment performance, meeting departmental KPIs and financial controls.
- Operate during the ORIEL transition, supporting equipment migration, commissioning, double‑running and documentation.
- Engage stakeholders to minimise service disruption and maintain continuity of patient care.
- Maintain accurate medical equipment inventory and financial targets.
- Conduct service reviews with clinic managers and manage escalation to Head of Department.
- Compile and update operating and instruction manuals; provide training support to users.
Oriel Transition Support Equipment Migration & Commissioning
- Assist planning and coordination of safe movement of devices.
- Support acceptance testing, configuration, functional verification and commissioning at ORIEL.
- Ensure equipment is labelled, tracked and recorded accurately during transfer.
- Work with ICT to coordinate device connectivity, networking and system integration.
Double‑Running Support
- Provide engineering support during dual‑site operation (City Road & ORIEL).
- Respond to equipment issues at either site to maintain continuity of care.
Project and Documentation Support
- Participate in ORIEL‑related working groups.
- Develop ORIEL‑specific SOPs, commissioning workflows, equipment readiness and lifecycle documentation.
- Assist with equipment lifecycle planning and decommissioning linked to ORIEL.
Training & Stakeholder Engagement
- Assist in training clinical staff and engineering colleagues on new ORIEL devices.
- Liaise with clinical services, estates, ICT and suppliers for smooth transition.

Person Specification
Education / Qualification
- Undergraduate degree in Engineering or Computing.
- Recognised industry qualifications – Medical Equipment certification, Project Management.
- EST certification.
- Post‑graduate degree in Medical Devices Management or equivalent (desirable).
- Professional registration (Clinical Scientist, RTC) or working towards (desirable).
Experience
- Extensive knowledge of test procedures to verify medical equipment performance.
- Ability to plan and carry out servicing including electrical safety testing on a range of equipment.
- Experience managing and prioritising workload, meeting deadlines.
- Specialist experience with ophthalmic medical equipment.
- Experience in project assignment or taking additional responsibilities.
- Experience working under a Quality Management System.
- Experience with medical technology networking/connectivity (desirable).
Knowledge
- Knowledge of test procedures for specialist medical equipment safety and performance.
- Extensive knowledge of medical equipment databases.
- Competency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Medical technology networking/connectivity.
