In this role you will lead the delivery of safe, effective care to patients and carers, ensuring a high quality, evidence‑based, patient‑centred experience.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure high quality, evidence‑based patient‑centred care is delivered and provide assurance of this while delivering the Trust’s core objectives and strategies.
  • Set standards with nursing team and foster an environment that supports safe and effective care.
  • Develop and deliver continuous improvement initiatives to meet all quality indicators, KPIs and safety standards.
  • Review and implement patient pathway management to improve flow and efficiency, ensuring a positive patient experience.
  • Develop an understanding of the potential role of a Cataract Nurse Practitioner.
  • Manage patient pathways pre‑procedure and post‑procedure for YAG laser capsulotomy, including consenting and training to undertake the procedure.
  • Practice autonomously with a high level of accountability at an advanced clinical level, making critical clinical decisions.
  • Work with the Nurse Consultant, ACPs and Medical team to manage a caseload of patients in nurse‑led review clinics.
  • Use a range of assessment methods (history taking, holistic assessment, risk factor identification, mental health assessment, etc.) to establish diagnosis and monitor disease progression of ophthalmic conditions.
  • Collaborate with the multi‑professional team to assess, manage and monitor patients’ health needs.

Qualifications and Person Specification

Education / Qualification

  • Registered Nurse
  • PG Cert Clinical Ophthalmic Practice or Equivalent
  • Management qualification / experience
  • 3 years experience as Band 6

Desirable qualifications

  • Leadership course
  • MSc or working towards MSc level qualification

Skills & Abilities – Essential

  • Cataract experience
  • Biometry / A scan experience or range of ophthalmic skill set
  • Evidence of sound clinical reasoning and decision making skills

Skills & Abilities – Desirable

  • Experience with managing the Eroster
  • Experience or budgetary skills

Knowledge – Essential

  • Up to date knowledge of ophthalmic clinical conditions and management
  • Experience in staff management

Knowledge – Desirable

  • Insight into current professional issues / research / audit
