We're looking for a Payroll Assistant to join our busy payroll team, ensuring payrolls are processed in line with UK legislation, deadlines are met, and client queries are handled professionally. This role is well suited to someone with payroll experience in a bureau or multi-client environment and comfortable working to strict deadlines.
Key Responsibilities- Assist with the end-to-end processing of multiple client payrolls on a weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly, monthly and annual basis
- Accurately process starters, leavers, salary changes, overtime, bonuses, SSP, SMP, SPP, and other statutory payments
- Calculate and process statutory deductions including PAYE, National Insurance, student loans, and attachment of earnings orders
- Ensure payrolls are processed in line with agreed client deadlines and service level agreements
- Support compliance with UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements
- Assist with submissions including RTI (FPS/EPS), pension uploads, and statutory reports
- Support auto-enrolment duties including assessment, postponement, opt-ins/opt-outs, and contribution calculations
- Maintain accurate payroll records in line with GDPR and data protection requirements
- Respond to payroll queries from clients and employees in a professional and timely manner
- Liaise with HMRC, pension providers, and third parties where required
- Escalate complex issues or discrepancies to senior team members when appropriate
- Support year-end processes including P60s and P11Ds (where applicable)
- Support the wider payroll team across our offices during peak periods
- Previous experience working in a payroll role, ideally within a bureau or multi-client environment
- Working knowledge of UK payroll legislation and HMRC requirements
- Experience processing payroll using payroll software (e.g. Sage, BrightPay, Iris, Xero Payroll or similar)
- Strong numerical accuracy and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple payrolls and meet strict deadlines
