Our award‐winning Nonprofit team delivers a comprehensive range of audit, accounting and advisory services to a diverse client base, including charities, education bodies, trade associations and membership organisations. Charities and nonprofit organisations are a core sector for Moore Kingston Smith, so we are looking for an experienced Nonprofit Tax Senior Manager or Director to play a key role in shaping and growing our dedicated nonprofit tax offering within the Corporate and Business Tax team.

You will lead the delivery of high-quality tax advisory and compliance services to a portfolio of charities and nonprofit organisations, acting as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders and taking ownership of complex assignments from planning through to delivery. Alongside this, you will contribute to the continued development of our specialist capability — mentoring and developing junior colleagues, supporting the wider firm with technical input on nonprofit tax matters, and contributing to business development and thought leadership in the sector.

The role offers the opportunity to work closely with tax partners and nonprofit audit partners, playing a visible and collaborative role in strengthening and expanding our presence in this important sector.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver a portfolio of charity and nonprofit tax engagements, providing high quality advisory and compliance services and acting as a trusted advisor to senior stakeholders.
  • Provide specialised technical advice across key charity and nonprofit areas, including:
    • Charity tax reliefs and exemptions.
    • Creative tax relief claims (particularly exhibition and orchestra tax relief).
    • Structuring for non-exempt activities and property transactions.
    • Charity and non-profit restructurings.
    • Restrictions on non-charitable expenditure.
    • Gift Aid (for charities and donors).
    • Mutual trading tax status.
  • Provide timely and pragmatic support to our Practice teams on technical tax queries that arise from their work in preparing annual tax computations for charities and nonprofit clients.
  • Identify and pursue advisory opportunities with existing clients and contributing to the growth of the charity and nonprofit offering.
  • Contribute to sector-specific thought leadership and business development with a view to winning new engagements for the firm.
  • Deliver seminars and training on relevant topics (online, in-house and at external speaking engagements).
  • Coach and develop junior colleagues, sharing technical knowledge and supporting performance, to establish and build strong technical resource to deliver the work.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • Strong UK tax technical knowledge, with significant charities and nonprofit sector experience in a professional services firm, delivering both compliance and advisory work.
  • ATT and/or CTA qualified preferred.
  • Demonstrable involvement in business development (identifying opportunities, supporting proposals/tenders and converting work through the wider firm network).
  • Well-developed client relationship skills, including experience advising senior stakeholders and delivering proactive, value-adding and commercially focused advice.
  • Proven track record of working with charities, membership organisations and companies limited by guarantees, navigating the unique and complex tax landscape of the nonprofit sector.
  • High degree of professionalism, integrity and sound judgement, with strong awareness of risk and quality requirements.
  • Commercially aware, with an understanding of the charity and nonprofit operating environment and the issues facing the sector.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and verbal), with the ability to explain complex technical matters clearly to non-specialists.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented, with a proven willingness to support, coach and develop colleagues.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments, budgets, deadlines and stakeholder expectations.
