Newham Independent Group Political Assistant

One day per week. Fixed Term until May 2026.

Newham is one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs in England and Wales. Host to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and home to the largest urban regeneration site in Europe, Newham boasts a vibrant and thriving culture and community.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Independent Group of Councillors of Newham Council to support the group’s policy programme and communicate the agenda to the City.
  • Understand the local social, economic and political landscape to analyse the impact of Government policy on the City.
  • Identify new issues facing the City as they emerge and work with Councillors on plans to address them and communicate a response.
  • Ensure an effective Newham Independent Group presence at Council meetings by briefing Councillors and enabling clear and concise contributions at Committees and Full Council.
  • Support the team to develop an ongoing positive narrative about the Newham Independent Group’s policy programme through speaking opportunities, press interviews and coverage in local publications and on social media.
  • Act as an effective link between Members of the Group and Officers, ensuring the Group’s priorities are understood and reflected in policy development and decision-making.
  • Operate with minimal supervision in a high-pressured environment with competing demands and a significant workload.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build, develop and maintain good working relationships with very senior people across diverse organisations; able to handle sensitive and difficult matters.
  • Ability to understand and analyse political and policy issues and communicate them effectively.
  • Ability to complete a successful application by reviewing the person specification and providing relevant examples of work experience.
