The Quality & Compliance Manager is responsible for implementing and operating the company’s quality, compliance, and supply-chain assurance systems for timber-based doors and furniture products. The role focuses on execution, evidence management, and continuous improvement within defined policies and governance set by the Technical Director. It is a hands-on operational role supporting product quality, regulatory compliance, and ethical supply-chain standards across the supply chain.
Key responsibilities
- Quality management
- Implement and maintain quality management systems aligned to ISO 9001 principles.
- Support environmental management processes within an ISO 14001 operating environment.
- Define and maintain product quality standards, specifications, and acceptance criteria.
- Manage incoming quality control and pre-shipment inspection processes using the company’s quality management system.
- Lead non-conformance management, corrective and preventive actions, and root cause analysis.
- Monitor product performance, returns, complaints, and quality trends to drive continuous improvement.
- Operate due diligence systems to support compliance with the UK Timber Regulation (UKTR).
- Maintain chain-of-custody and legality evidence for timber-based products.
- Manage and verify FSC and PEFC certification claims and supporting documentation.
- Identify compliance gaps and escalate material risks with clear, evidence-based recommendations.
- Maintain accurate, auditable records to support regulatory, customer, and certification requirements.
- Manage supplier ethical compliance data through SEDEX.
- Review and interpret SMETA audit reports and corrective action plans.
- Monitor supplier performance against quality, ethical, and compliance expectations.
- Support supplier onboarding, risk assessment, and ongoing monitoring processes.
- Act as the primary operational interface between customer quality teams, Buyers, overseas manufacturing partners, supply-chain agents, and the internal QC team.
- Coordinate responses to customer quality concerns, audits, and technical queries.
- Translate customer quality and compliance requirements into clear supplier actions and inspection priorities.
- Ensure alignment across internal and external stakeholders on quality standards, compliance requirements, inspection outcomes, and shipment decisions.
- Work closely with Procurement and other internal stakeholders where quality or compliance issues affect product release, supply continuity, or customer requirements.
- Manage a small team of QC inspectors.
- Operate and maintain the company’s quality management platform (Qarma) to support inspections, non-conformance management, corrective actions, and supplier performance tracking.
- Ensure quality and compliance data is accurate, complete, and maintained in line with audit and governance requirements.
- Support continuous improvement of quality data capture and reporting processes.
Experience and knowledge
Essential
- Proven experience in a quality or compliance management role within timber, furniture, building products, or similar manufactured goods.
- Practical working knowledge of UKTR or equivalent timber due diligence frameworks.
- Experience working with overseas manufacturers and imported product supply chains.
- Understanding of chain-of-custody principles and certification systems such as FSC and PEFC.
- Experience operating within an ISO 9001 quality management environment.
- Strong documentation, evidence review, and audit support capability.
Desirable
- Experience working within an ISO 14001 environmental management environment.
- Exposure to EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) requirements.
- Experience interfacing directly with customer quality or technical teams.
- Prior experience using digital quality management systems such as Qarma, or similar platforms.
