ART Business Loans (herein ART) is a not-for-profit Community Development Finance Institution (CDFI), owned by their members – both borrowers and investors. ART’s original mission ‘to alleviate poverty through enterprise’ has developed over the years to include a broader remit ‘to ensure that viable businesses in the West Midlands can access the finance they need.’

ART is now looking to appoint a new Chair to replace their current Chair whose term of office is ending in 2026. The successful candidate will be joining ART Business Loans at an exciting and challenging time, with ambition and opportunity to grow scale and impact. The role offers the successful individual the opportunity to play a leading role in supporting the growth and transformation of SMEs throughout the West Midlands.

ART is a lender, so we are seeking someone with strong commercial instincts and a grasp of lending principles. The health of ART’s loan book is vital to its long-term success. As with any lending organisation, balancing sales and credit risk is key—and it is the Chair’s role to foster consensus and navigate that middle ground.

We are looking for the following attributes in prospective candidates:

  • Sound financial knowledge
  • A proven experience of contributing to business strategy
  • An excellent regional network to assist with raising the profile of ART
  • Marketing or digital expertise, to include SEO and web analytics
  • Exposure to scaling up, driving growth and leading a business
  • A proven track record as a Chair or Non-Exec

In line with attributes associated with all high performing boards, the Chair should be a team player, comfortable with business strategy, scrutiny and holding the executive to account, and able to offer a balance of support and stretch. All directors must take decisions objectively in the interests of ART.

This position offers a small stipend, and reasonable expenses will be covered.
