Senior Legal Counsel – Employment, Incentives & Pensions

Location: London (or Remote UK) – Full‑time

Base salary: £93,500 – £126,500 (depending on experience) + stock options + benefits

About the role

Join Monzo’s Legal & Board Governance Collective. You will advise on employment, incentives and pensions (EIP) matters across a regulated bank environment, reporting to the Director of Legal – EIP. Working closely with People, Reward, Risk & Compliance and Finance teams, you will lead a wide range of EIP legal matters and help scale the role as the business grows in the UK and internationally.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide strategic employment legal advice and commercial solutions on EIP matters impacting the Group and its subsidiaries.
  • Act as a trusted adviser and partner to People, developing policies, procedures, guidance and templates.
  • Support the employee life cycle from hiring (including executive service contracts) to departures.
  • Manage contentious EIP matters in conjunction with external counsel.
  • Work with Reward to develop compensation arrangements and remuneration policies within bank regulatory frameworks.
  • Support corporate and commercial functions, including TUPE matters.
  • Assist international projects in the EU and US as the business scales.
  • Collaborate with Legal, People, Reward, Tax, Risk & Compliance and Finance Collectives on EIP matters.
  • Develop and implement internal frameworks, processes and procedures to improve efficiency and scalability of EIP legal advice.
  • Deliver training, share insights and help educate others on EIP matters.
  • Manage relationships with external counsel to optimise legal spend and obtain best value.

Qualifications

  • Experienced, commercial and pragmatic employment lawyer with 6+ years PQE or equivalent.
  • Strong technical grounding in all aspects of employment law; background in private practice and ideally in‑house at a bank or financial institution.
  • Experience advising on employment‑related regulatory issues in financial services (SMCR, FCA Code of Conduct, Remuneration Code).
  • Experience with incentive structures (share options) and knowledge of workplace defined‑contribution pension arrangements.
  • Strategic thinker, strong communicator and problem solver who balances business and risk perspectives.
  • Willing to handle a broad range of EIP matters, including those outside core expertise, in a proactive and resourceful manner.
  • Comfortable liaising at all organisational levels up to the Executive.
  • Skilled in horizon scanning, risk assessment, and implementation of mitigating actions.
  • Dynamic, entrepreneurial and comfortable with ambiguity in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Open, curious mind and passion for the intersection of banking and technology.
